{"id":133345,"date":"2025-09-10T08:51:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T08:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/133345\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T08:51:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T08:51:07","slug":"what-jessica-pegula-and-madison-keys-were-messaging-each-other-before-a-wta-final-earlier-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/133345\/","title":{"rendered":"What Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys were messaging each other before a WTA final earlier this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys are two of the most popular players on tour and have enjoyed stellar seasons in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Pegula, a runner-up at last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a>, has won three tour-level titles in 2025 and is the only player in the women\u2019s game to have done so on three different surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Her fellow American, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/madison-keys-sends-social-media-message-after-beating-aryna-sabalenka-in-the-australian-open-final\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keys, won her maiden Grand Slam title this year<\/a>, stunning Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka in back-to-back matches to seal victory in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2195838409-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Aryna Sabalenka looks on as Madison Keys celebrates with the Australian Open title\" class=\"wp-image-62151\" \/>Photo by Graham Denholm\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The pair faced off in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WTA<\/a> final right before the Australian Open began, battling it out for the title in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>Pegula and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/madison-keys\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keys<\/a> have now revealed what they were messaging each other about on the morning of the final.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys were trying to sort flights to Melbourne right before Adelaide final<\/p>\n<p>During the latest episode of \u2018The Player\u2019s Box Podcast\u2019, Pegula and Keys recalled a discussion they had before the Adelaide International final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJess [Pegula] and I played in the finals of Adelaide this year, and we finished the match. We were both trying to rush to get to Melbourne and figure things out,\u201d said Keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the match, we were texting the morning of our final. \u2018Hey, should we just fly together to Melbourne? We can just split it, we\u2019ll finish our match, and what time do you think we can get to the airport?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pegula explained how concerned she was about not making it to Melbourne in time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2192674334-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys pose together before the 2025 Adelaide International final\" class=\"wp-image-128618\" \/>Photo by MICHAEL ERREY\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, I know we\u2019re going to go out there and compete; we were trying to get to Melbourne, there were no flights,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played Monday, so I had one day before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/australian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a>, and we were trying to decide if we should fly private and just split it with our teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just a conversation that needed to happen. We had no other option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keys was victorious in the Adelaide final against Pegula and received a lengthy message from the world number four after the match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJess sent me the longest, nicest message, saying you played unreal today, you could genuinely win the Australian Open,\u201d said Keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pegula got her href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/opinion\/there-were-three-top-players-who-badly-disappointed-at-the-us-open-in-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keys lost in the first round of the US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the result, Keys still looks set to qualify for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta-finals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WTA Finals<\/a> for just the second time in her career.<\/p>\n<p>Why Madison Keys will qualify for the 2025 WTA Finals<\/p>\n<p>The American star currently sits fifth in the \u2018Live WTA Race\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She sits in a comfortable position, but doesn\u2019t actually need to be ranked in the top eight to qualify.<\/p>\n<p>The WTA rule book states that any player ranked between ninth and 20th who has won a Grand Slam title within the year gains direct entry into the event.<\/p>\n<p>With a 2,780 point gap separating her and 20th placed Linda Noskova, the likelihood is that we will see Keys line up in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 WTA Finals are scheduled to begin on Saturday, November
