{"id":134456,"date":"2025-09-10T19:26:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T19:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/134456\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T19:26:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T19:26:11","slug":"canada-u-s-travel-data-down-again-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/134456\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada-U.S. travel data down again in August"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">New preliminary data shows that trips between Canada and the United States are down once again in August, in what Statistics Canada notes is the seventh straight month of <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/250910\/dq250910c-eng.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declining international travel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last month, 1.8 million U.S. residents entered Canada by automobile and just shy of 590,000 did so by air, down 4.5 and 3.6 per cent, respectively, from August 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Canadian travellers, meanwhile, showed a \u201csteep decline\u201d in trips to the United States, with U.S. automobile travel down roughly 34 per cent and air travel down more than 25 per cent from 12 months prior. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the StatCan data, trips by Canadian residents are counted upon their return to Canada.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">August\u2019s year-over-year decline is only the latest in months of decreases for Canada-U.S. travel, as U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s global trade war continues to strain relationships between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Traffic began to falter <a href=\"https:\/\/ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/where-have-all-the-snowbirds-gone-canadians-cold-on-us-travel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/where-have-all-the-snowbirds-gone-canadians-cold-on-us-travel\/\">earlier this year<\/a> in the wake of Trump imposing sweeping <a href=\"http:\/\/ctvnews.ca\/politics\/article\/canada-retaliating-for-trumps-tariffs-with-25-per-cent-tariffs-on-billions-of-us-goods-justin-trudeau\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs on Canadian imports<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/canadians-pause-and-think-twice-about-travel-to-us-immigration-lawyer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ramping up immigration enforcement and detentions<\/a>, all amid frequent suggestions that Canada become the <a href=\"http:\/\/ctvnews.ca\/world\/article\/donald-trump-says-canada-becoming-51st-us-state-is-a-great-idea-jean-charest-calls-the-comment-a-wake-up-call\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">51st U.S. state<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the time since, each passing month has brought new data showing the gap left by <a href=\"http:\/\/ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/a-steep-decline-canada-us-travel-continues-to-fall-in-june-data-shows\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadians choosing not to cross into the United States<\/a>, and in the month of July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/in-a-rare-reversal-of-trends-more-americans-visit-canada-by-car-than-vice-versa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. border-crossers outnumbered Canadians<\/a> &#8212;
