James McAvoy has had an eventful time at this year\u2019s Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>. On Saturday, the actor premiered his directorial debut, California Schemin\u2019. Two days later, he was assaulted by a stranger at a bar. The update comes from People<\/a>, which reports that McAvoy was having a \u201cquiet night\u201d at Toronto watering hole Charlotte\u2019s Room when he was punched by the random man. \u201cJames was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out,\u201d a source reportedly \u201cclose to McAvoy\u201d told the outlet. \u201cJames\u2019 back was to him and the man just punched him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Entertainment Weekly adds<\/a> that the actor \u201chad not interacted with the man previously, nor did he provoke the attack, which occurred around 11:55 p.m.\u201d McAvoy reportedly tried to deescalate the situation as others intervened. It also sounds like the incident didn\u2019t totally derail his evening. Afterwards, People\u2018s source said McAvoy stuck around and laughed it off with bar staff and other patrons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McAvoy both stars in and directed California Schemin\u2018, which tells the true story of two Scottish rappers who pretended to be American for three years to break into the scene. S\u00e9amus McLean Ross, Samuel Bottomley, Lucy Halliday, and Rebekah Murrell also appear. In a prior interview with People<\/a>, McAvoy said stepping behind the camera for the first time was \u201cstressful\u201d but \u201camazing.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s the most creative thing I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d he added. Who knows\u2014maybe the incident at the bar will inspire a follow-up feature that takes him back to the fest sometime soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
