Israel-Premier Tech requests to race as ‘IPT’ at GP Qu\u00e9bec and Montr\u00e9al after human rights groups push for team to be barred.<\/p>\n

Pressure on Israel-Premier Tech<\/a> crossed the Atlantic from the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/a> to Canada this week.<\/p>\n

Organizers of the GP de Qu\u00e9bec and GP de Montr\u00e9al<\/a> confirmed that the team would race as \u201cIPT\u201d on Friday and Sunday amid fear of disruptive demonstrations in the Canadian cities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis request came directly from the team,\u201d said Joseph Limare, director of the Qu\u00e9bec and Montr\u00e9al organizational group.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey asked us to remove the name \u2018Israel\u2019 from all expressions around the circuit. They will also be racing in a different kit during our events,\u201d Limare said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Israel Premier-Tech will instead wear the so-called \u201cMonogram\u201d kit it offers to riders for training and is currently using at the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tensions over the team\u2019s presence at the Spanish tour are at boiling point as the ongoing war and humanitarian conditions in Gaza worsen.<\/p>\n

Demonstrations at the Vuelta forced two stages to be cut short and the stage 18 time trial to be slashed by 60 percent in distance. Race officials are mobilizing thousands of security staff for the final stage on Sunday in Madrid.<\/p>\n

The anger is bubbling across continents.<\/p>\n

Canadian outlet La Presse<\/a> wrote this week that the \u201cBikers for Palestine\u201d activist group launched an online petition supported by thousands urging organizers of the Canadian races to withdraw invitations to Israel-Premier Tech.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, national broadcaster CBC<\/a> reported that a human rights group was threatening legal action against the City of Montr\u00e9al if Israel-Premier Tech wasn\u2019t excluded from Sunday\u2019s race.<\/p>\n

Israel-Premier Tech is owned by Canadian-Israeli multi-millionaire Sylvan Adams.<\/p>\n

The team built part of its identity around a roster heavy on Canadian staff and riders. Michael Woods, Guillaume Boivin, and Derek Gee have raced for the team, and former pro Steve Bauer leads the directing staff.<\/p>\n

Race organizers in Qu\u00e9bec and Montr\u00e9al are expecting protests Friday and Sunday and are coordinating with local authorities.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll be hoping for none of the impacts from Spain to be transported to their WorldTour one-dayers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese individuals have the right to express themselves regarding the political situation,\u201d said Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Mayor Bruno Machand.<\/p>\n

One rider from Israel-Premier Tech who won\u2019t face any protestors on Friday and Sunday is Michael Woods.<\/p>\n
