{"id":137666,"date":"2025-09-12T03:35:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T03:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/137666\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T03:35:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T03:35:14","slug":"tight-budget-means-alberta-teachers-face-a-stark-choice-in-bargaining-danielle-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/137666\/","title":{"rendered":"Tight budget means Alberta teachers face a stark choice in bargaining: Danielle Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a provincewide teachers strike looming, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says their union has a stark choice between heftier pay hikes and more teachers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Smith suggested they can have one or the other, but they can\u2019t have both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that with the tight budget that we have, any additional dollars for salaries end up taking away from our ability to hire more teachers,\u201d she said Thursday at an unrelated announcement in Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p>Smith made the comments when asked about stalled contract talks between her government and the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/alberta-teachers-association\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberta Teachers\u2019 Association<\/a>, the day after the union set a strike date of Oct. 6.<\/p>\n<p>Her United Conservative Party government is poised to run a massive $6.5 billion deficit this budget year.<\/p>\n<p>It has offered wage hikes starting at 12 per cent over four years, with a promise to hire 3,000 teachers over three years. Smith said that\u2019s a fair wage increase, and in line with other public sector deals.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe union asked us to pledge to hire 1,000 new teachers a year for the next three years. We did, and they broke off talks,\u201d said Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta Teachers\u2019 Association president Jason Schilling said in an interview later Thursday that members want their concerns about classroom conditions and salary addressed and said Smith\u2019s comments present a false choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think teachers shouldn\u2019t have to choose one over the other. The system deserves to have both.
