{"id":137841,"date":"2025-09-12T05:21:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T05:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/137841\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T05:21:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T05:21:09","slug":"police-say-calgary-man-tunnelled-into-upstairs-neighbours-unit-after-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/137841\/","title":{"rendered":"Police say Calgary man &#8216;tunnelled&#8217; into upstairs neighbour&#8217;s unit after dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What started as a neighbourly dispute ended with one of those neighbours &#8220;tunnelling&#8221;\u00a0into the unit of the other, according to Calgary police.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an incident police call disturbing and a violation of space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll sum it up in one word: creepy,&#8221; said Insp.\u00a0Keith Hurley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police say a woman had been having ongoing issues with the neighbour living directly below her unit on the 6400 block of Coach Hill Road S.W.<\/p>\n<p>Hurley\u00a0said there had been one or two interactions between the male neighbour and police over the past couple of months, where there was\u00a0concern for his mental health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The issues were enough that the woman left her residence for a period of\u00a0time, somewhere\u00a0between\u00a0a few weeks to a month,\u00a0said Hurley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think for their own feeling of safety and to get &#8230;\u00a0space from the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When she came home, she had some difficulty entering the unit because her door was locked from the inside, Hurley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know the exact nature of that lock from the inside, but I&#8217;m\u00a0guessing it&#8217;s something that could only be manipulated by somebody inside the residence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once she got inside, she discovered a strange scene, and reported a break-and-enter to police on Sept. 5, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a fireplace within the residence. It looked like it had a few holes that had\u00a0been drilled in it, and then\u00a0one wall that had been breached,&#8221; said Hurley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A large hole is knocked out in the wall next to a fireplace. \"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/calgary-police-tunnel-3.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.9190031152647975\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Police discovered a large hole in the wall next to a fireplace that they say the man used to tunnel into the woman&#8217;s unit.  (Calgary Police Service)<\/p>\n<p>Behind the fireplace was a large hole in the floor that police say looked like it had been cut and\u00a0appeared to connect to\u00a0the suite below.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police executed a search warrant and say they found the downstairs neighbour &#8220;hiding&#8221; in his unit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also found a ladder from his unit extending up to the hole behind the fireplace in the above residence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A 46-year-old man is charged with one count of break-and-enter with intent to commit criminal harassment, mischief to property over $5,000, and two counts of disobeying an order.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this time, we have no information to believe\u00a0that the accused did anything other than just enter the residence,&#8221; Hurley said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A square shaped hole in the ground with a drill lying on the floor beside it \"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/calgary-police-tunnelling-2.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7501589319771138\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>A 46-year-old Calgary man is now charged with break-and-enter with intent to commit criminal harassment.
