Poland’s armed forces<\/a>\u00a0shot down Russian drones after they violated national airspace during an attack on Ukraine overnight into Wednesday. Shortly after the incident, videos and images that purport to depict the incident have circulated online, as well as propaganda and disinformation from Russia,\u00a0Polish politicians<\/a> say. Prime Minister Donald Tusk<\/a>\u00a0wrote on the social media platform X<\/a>\u00a0that Russian propaganda directly targets the security of Poland.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry claims<\/a> that Poland itself has been spreading “myths” about the drone incursion to “aggravate the Ukrainian crisis.” At the same time, pro-Kremlin media outlets and military bloggers are actively spreading disinformation about the drones,\u00a0falsely asserting that there is no evidence that Russian<\/a> drones were shot down. Some Russian news outlets are even talking about a “provocation by Ukraine”<\/a> or “unidentifiable objects.”<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

European Commission<\/a> President Ursula von der Leyen<\/a>, said the drones entering Polish airspace were\u00a0Shahed drones<\/a>, an Iranian design<\/a>\u00a0that Russia commonly uses\u00a0for attacking Ukraine. This is not the first time that a Russian Shahed drone was found in Poland.\u00a0It was only in August that Polish authorities found debris<\/a> of what appears to be a Russian drone that had crashed into a field.<\/p>\n

DW Fact Check looks\u00a0at three examples of the numerous videos and claims about the drones that are being shared on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Does this really show a drone attack? \u00a0<\/p>\n

Claim: A user<\/a> on TikTok shares several videos allegedly showing Russian drone attacks on Poland. The description of one of the video<\/a> reads “5 Minutes ago! Polish NATO Jets destroy record number of Shahed drones.”\u00a0The videos all have the same look and some have hundreds of thousands of views.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Verdict: Fake \u00a0<\/p>\n

The video scenes do not show the recent drones that entered Polish airspace, but are from the video game “Arma 3.”<\/a>\u00a0Several users mentioned this suspicion in the comment section and referred to the video game. Through a reverse image search<\/a>, it is possible to track it back to a YouTube account<\/a> sharing the exact same scenes as the TikTok user. The description says: “Arma 3 footage! Not real news!”\u00a0\u00a0The account regularly shares videos of combat operations in the form of video game simulations, which are often linked to the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Poland shoots down Russian drones in its airspace<\/p>\n

So the footage does not show the real incident. Apart from that, the TikTok user also published a clip on their account<\/a>\u00a0showing a video game controller. Footage from the video game “Arma 3”\u00a0has repeatedly been misused\u00a0in other cases such as the India-Pakistan conflict<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0the war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Is this a Russian drone in Polish airspace? \u00a0<\/p>\n

Claim:\u00a0A TikTok<\/a>\u00a0user has shared a video<\/a>\u00a0of a drone flying. The date mentioned in the video is “Poland, 10 September 2025,”\u00a0linking it to the current incident of Russian drones entering Polish airspace. The video was viewed more than 2.4 million times.<\/p>\n

DW Fact check: False \u00a0<\/p>\n

The video does not show a Russian drone in Poland,\u00a0and that’s quite easy to detect:\u00a0An important first detail is\u00a0the daylight in the video. The video shows a drone during the day, but the drones appeared overnight. The first airspace breach occurred at about 11:30 p.m. local time (2130 GMT\/UTC) and continued until about 6:30 a.m.<\/a> It was dark\u00a0at that\u00a0time. \u00a0<\/p>\n

A reverse image search provides further information: The video has already appeared several times in the past, such as in February, when a Ukrainian website<\/a> reported on Russian drone attacks, and again in July<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0So\u00a0the video is not linked to the current situation. Still, we were not able to find the exact origin of the video.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Where did the drones crash?<\/p>\n

Claim: A user on the\u00a0social media platform X<\/a>\u00a0shared a picture of a map with a\u00a0drone\u00a0crash site in Mniszkow.\u00a0The post said<\/a>\u00a0it was one of the Russian drones that entered the Polish airspace in the early morning of September 10. That is almost 300 kilometers<\/a>\u00a0(180 miles) from the eastern Polish border<\/a>, where the other drones were found.\u00a0In the comments section, some users<\/a> were wondering\u00a0if this information was true.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

DW Fact check: True \u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Poland’s Interior Ministry<\/a>\u00a0Polish authorities are on duty in\u00a0Podlasie, Mazovia, Lublin and Subcarpathia. At least three crash sites of 19 drones in total were confirmed in eastern Poland. However, another drone\u00a0was\u00a0also found in\u00a0Mniszkow, a town located hundreds of kilometers<\/a> away from the other crash sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to local authorities from Opoczno County<\/a>, an object suspected of being a foreign military drone was discovered early in the morning of September 10 in a field in Mniszkow. It is true that a drone was found at this place, which matches the map attached in the social media post.<\/p>\n

The photo from the X post can be found through the\u00a0picture agency imago<\/a>. It’s exactly the same photo showing the drone with the military number\u00a0“\u042b\u042b31402” and it was\u00a0found by the authorities in Mniszkow, according to imago.\u00a0Several<\/a> media outlets<\/a> published the photo.\u00a0<\/p>\n
