Spins, mechanical failures, and on-track contact shook up the playoff standings.

Polesitter Layne Riggs spun on the opening lap but made a huge comeback to win. Chandler Smith slowed with mechanical issue. Jake Garcia lost power steering. Tyler Ankrum hit the wall, after contact. Each incident affected the playoff hunt.

NASCAR Truck Series Playoffs: Riggs’ Opening-Lap Spin

Layne Riggs’ NASCAR Truck Series night at Bristol started in disaster when he spun on the opening lap. His No. 34 Ford dropped to the back of the field. The spin could have ended his hopes, but Riggs and his team stayed calm and executed a perfect recovery strategy.

Using smart pit calls, he steadily climbed through the pack. On Lap 141, Riggs took the lead and never looked back.

“I think this shows that we’re right there, we’re in contention, we can do it,” said Riggs, who ran the final 109 green-flag laps with scuffed qualifying tires on his No. 34 Ford, having used a set of stickers after the spin on Lap 1. “That’s three in a row at Bristol for Front Row Motorsports. It’s a big testament to all these guys. We’ve got a really good package here.

“Man, I’m excited for New Hampshire. I’ve never even been there and I already love that race track.”

What began as a potential disaster became a triumphant spin-to-win performance, marking his fifth career NASCAR Truck Series victory, his third of 2025, and a statement of resilience and skill in the playoffs.

Mechanical Failures Shake the Standings

Mechanical problems hurt several NASCAR Truck Series playoff drivers. On Lap 33, Chandler Smith’s No. 38 Ford experienced an electrical issue that slowed his truck. He pitted under green several times, ultimately falling 12 laps behind. Smith finished 30th and dropped 24 points below the playoff cutline, hurting his championship hopes per Cameron Richardson of NASCAR,com.

“I’m not sure what the issue was honestly,” Smith said after the race. “Sounds like it was a sensor that just slowly unplugged itself, which is mind-boggling to me that we’re racing at this prestige of a level and can just have something just start wiggling its way out and completely ruin your day.”

Jake Garcia lost power steering after winning Stage 1. He struggled in the high-banked corners and had to pit again. Garcia finished 33rd, dropping from +2 to -14 points on the cutline. This was a major setback for his playoff run.

“First thing I noticed was the power steering went out,” Garcia recalled. “I thought that was the only problem. … I was just trying to diagnose the problem, ran it for about a lap before I realized how hot the water was getting, and then I had to pit and diagnosed the problem.

“It was a bolt on the motor that broke that we can’t control at all.”

Tyler Ankrum, was also squeezed by Kaden Honeycutt. Ankrum hit the wall hard. He pitted for repairs and finished 20th. He lost key stage points, now tied for sixth.

Bristol Race Recap and Playoff Impact

The NASCAR Truck Series at Bristol had five lead changes among four drivers and four cautions for 31 laps. Spins, mechanical failures, and contact shaped the playoff battle. There were no big multi-car wrecks, but small moments changed the leaderboard.

Riggs’ comeback win sets up an intense fight at New Hampshire. Every point will matter. The Bristol race showed why the NASCAR Truck Series playoffs are unpredictable. Resilience, skill, and a little luck all decide who moves on.

Dogli Wilberforce is a sports writer who covers NASCAR, Formula 1 and IndyCar Series for Heavy Sports.
