MANCHESTER, England (AP) \u2014 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is willing to adapt the team\u2019s approach following the signing of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and will not expect the Italian to offer the same ball-playing abilities as the departed Ederson Moraes.<\/p>\n

Ederson, who ended his trophy-laden eight-year spell at City by joining Fenerbahce last week, revolutionized the goalkeeper position in English soccer with his distribution and technical skills.<\/p>\n

That made him a perfect fit for Guardiola\u2019s style of play but the same cannot be said of Donnarumma, a brilliant shot-stopper whose strength isn\u2019t passing the ball out from the back.<\/p>\n

Donnarumma is in contention to make his debut for City in the Manchester derby against United in the Premier League on Sunday following his move from Paris Saint-Germain, although Guardiola wouldn\u2019t confirm whether the Italy international will start.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways I try to adapt to the quality of the players,\u201d Guardiola said Friday. \u201cI will not demand Gigi do something that is uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about the best player I have ever seen in the distribution, short or long, with Ederson. We didn\u2019t take Gigi to do what Ederson has done. Gigi has another quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guardiola said he wasn\u2019t trying to \u201cundermine\u201d Donnarumma by pointing out Ederson\u2019s qualities and spoke glowingly about his new signing\u2019s strengths.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s so tall. He\u2019s so huge,\u201d Guardiola said with a smile, adding: \u201cHe\u2019s a big presence on the big stages.<\/p>\n

Guardiola said he met Donnarumma for the first time on Wednesday but didn\u2019t see him train on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see,\u201d Guardiola said when asked if Donnarumma will come in for James Trafford, who has started City\u2019s first three games in the Premier League \u2014 a win at Wolverhampton before back-to-back losses to Tottenham and Brighton.<\/p>\n
