It was a big fight today – I think the match was tougher than the score showed.

“I’m really happy to have won my first match at the Davis Cup. I’m very proud and happy to be part of the Great Britain Davis Cup team and hopefully we can keep doing well.”

Fery couldn’t have hoped for a better start for the new LTA Colour Holder No.331. The 23-year-old broke in the opening game and was incredibly solid on the return throughout the contest.

Despite the added pressure of being one match down in the tie already and a break behind, Pieczkowski came back to level at 3-3 after Fery dragged a backhand wide – but the Pole struggled to keep the momentum going.

The Polish star missed two routine forehands on his serve at 4-4 to gift Fery the break needed to go on and take the opening set with relative comfort.

Fery – who recently won his first ATP Challenger Tour singles title in Barranquilla – broke on the opening game of the set, dealing a dagger blow to Pieczkowski.

On the cusp of a first win for his country, Fery showed excellent resilience to see off five break points leading 3-2 – not only holding but going on to break in the following game.

In one of the biggest moments of his career to date, Fery stayed as cool as you like to serve out his first Davis Cup victory in an hour and 18 minutes.

Match one: Norrie shows composure to give Britain the lead

Cam Norrie sealed the opening victory for Great Britain, overcoming a gutsy performance from Poland’s Tomasz Berkieta to win 7-6(9), 6-4.

Norrie showed his quality to come through in an hour and 40 minutes and get his first Davis Cup win since 2023.

“It’s nice to be back playing for my country,” Norrie said. “It’s my first time here. Tomasz is a young up-and-coming player, he’s very talented, got a big serve and hits the ball very well off both sides. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, not much rhythm – he played really well today and challenged me.”

The 30-year-old came closest to breaking in the first set, leading 5-4 with deuce on the 2024 Roland Garros finalists’ serve. However, Berkieta kept his nerve to confidently slap a forehand winner past Norrie to clinch the game before eventually forcing a tie-break.

The Briton had to stare down two set points at 6-4 in the tie-break but Berkieta went too big on his shots in crucial moments – making key errors off both wings.

Norrie continued to battle and used experience to his advantage and the pressure told. At 9-9, the Pole hit a double fault and on his fourth set point Norrie hit big lefty out-swinging serve to clinch the set after an hour.

Eager to stay on the front foot, Norrie got the first break of the match early in the second set. A rather deflated looking Berkieta left an easy volley only for it to drop in before making another costly mistake on break point.

Berkieta had a break back point with Norrie trying to serve out match but couldn’t make it count as Norrie’s third ace helped wrap up a hard fought win for his country.

Match draw & schedule Match day one Friday 12 September (Start: 16:00 BST) Cam Norrie (GBR) bt.
