{"id":139895,"date":"2025-09-13T01:21:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T01:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/139895\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T01:21:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T01:21:18","slug":"new-brain-stimulation-method-might-help-relieve-depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/139895\/","title":{"rendered":"New brain stimulation method might help relieve depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A new type of noninvasive brain stimulation may help people with moderate to severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/a-to-z-health\/mental-health\/how-to-deal-with-depression-2659464053.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:depression;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">depression<\/a> feel better faster than standard treatments, researchers in a new report say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The method, called high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), uses small electrodes on the scalp to deliver mild electrical currents to specific parts of the brain involved in mood regulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the trial conducted by UCLA researchers, 71 adults with major depression were randomly assigned to receive either active HD-tDCS or a sham treatment for 20 minutes a day over 12 working days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The group receiving real treatment showed a greater drop in their depression scores than the control group, according to findings published Thursday in <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2838763?guestAccessKey=aef661b6-9a93-47b1-93ef-b6dd96c7a51c&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=091125\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:JAMA Network Open;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">JAMA Network Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On average, depression scores fell by nearly eight points in the active group compared to about six points in the sham group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Patients who received HD-tDCS were also more likely to reach remission, with 39.5% reporting very low symptoms versus 13.3% in the sham group, the study noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;By honing in on the precise brain regions affected by depression, we&#8217;ve shown that stimulation can significantly improve mood and daily functioning,&#8221; lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/bri.ucla.edu\/events\/neurology-grand-rounds-ngr-mayank-jog-ph-d\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mayank Jog;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mayank Jog<\/a>, an assistant professor of neurology at UCLA, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The therapy was safe and well-tolerated, with only mild side effects such as skin redness or a burning sensation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Importantly, mood improvements occurred after just six days of treatment &#8212; faster than many medications or talk therapies, which can take weeks to work, researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Our data indicates that HD-tDCS therapy may also be effective for treating anxiety disorders, though dedicated studies to investigate this possibility are needed,&#8221; Jog said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Still, experts say longer studies with maintenance treatments are needed to see how long the benefits last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More information<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NYU Langone Health has more on <a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/conditions\/depression\/treatments\/deep-brain-stimulation-for-depression\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:brain stimulation for treating depression;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">brain stimulation for treating depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright \u00a9 2025 HealthDay.
