2021 US Open run<\/p>\n

Raducanu won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier – the only player to win a Slam via the qualification route. She also won every single set she played in Flushing Meadows that year. The then-18-year-old became Great Britain’s darling in tennis.<\/p>\n

Raducanu contested a final, a battle between two teenagers, against Canadian Fernandez, and won in straight sets. On her run to the final, Raducanu managed to avoid the defending champion, Naomi Osaka, who made the semis this year. Osaka was toppled in the third round, ending her US Open title defense.<\/p>\n

Serena Williams, a tennis Great as a 23-time Singles Slam winner, also did not compete that year, withdrawing from the US Open due to a hamstring injury. She retired the following year.<\/p>\n
