In addition, Zhao is the first director to win the award twice, coming after her 2020 victory for \u201cNomadland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince the Academy expanded the best picture field in 2009, TIFF Audience Award winners have become reliable Oscar barometers. Films such as \u201cGreen Book\u201d (2018) and \u201cNomadland\u201d (2020) went on to claim the top prize, while others like \u201cThe Fabelmans\u201d (2022) factored heavily into awards season. Only one winner, \u201cWhere Do We Go Now?\u201d (2011), failed to secure a best picture nom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEvery other winner has claimed at least one Oscar. Last year\u2019s winner, \u201cThe Life of Chuck,\u201d which Neon delayed to 2025, faces an uphill battle this year to maintain that streak given its June release date, but it could show up in adapted screenplay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe people\u2019s choice category was created in 1978. Seven recipients won best picture at the Oscars, with five of those victories coming in the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGuillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein\u201d was the first runner-up for the Canadian prize, which was followed by Rian Johnson\u2019s \u201cWake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery\u201d in the third place spot. The audience prize for documentary went to \u201cThe Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue\u201d from Barry Avrich. The film looks at a former Israeli general and his attempts to rescue his family during the\u00a0October 7 attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe International People\u2019s Choice winner was Park Chan-wook\u2019s South Korean satirical thriller \u201cNo Other Choice,\u201d ahead of runner-up \u201cSentimental Value\u201d from Norwegian director Joachim Trier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/toronto-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toronto-film-festival\" data-tag=\"toronto-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Film Festival<\/a>\u2019s 50th edition was one of its starriest in years.
