Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed that she moved to the UK because of Donald Trump, saying, \u201cEverything here is just better\u201d.<\/p>\n

At a conversation event on Sunday at Cheltenham\u2019s Everyman theatre \u2013 the comedian\u2019s first public appearance since leaving the US \u2013 broadcaster Richard Bacon asked DeGeneres if it was true Trump had spurred her decision to relocate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d she said. \u201cWe got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, \u2018He got in.\u2019 And we\u2019re like, \u2018We\u2019re staying here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

DeGeneres moved with her wife, Portia de Rossi, to a house in the Cotswolds in 2024 after her long-running talkshow ended and she embarked on a \u201cfinal comedy tour\u201d around the US.<\/p>\n

At the time, her move was described as permanent. A source told industry publication The Wrap that DeGeneres was \u201cnever coming back\u201d and was motivated by Trump, though DeGeneres herself had not confirmed the reasoning until now.<\/p>\n

DeGeneres told Bacon that her new home was \u201cbeautiful\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s clean,\u201d she raved. \u201cEverything here is just better \u2013 the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also expressed concern for LGBTQ+ rights in the US, hinting that she and De Rossi may get married again in the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,\u201d DeGeneres said, referencing an overwhelming vote by southern Baptists<\/a> in June to endorse a resolution that would seek to overturn same-sex marriage in the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it,\u201d DeGeneres continued. \u201cPortia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we\u2019re going to get married here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in the talk, she added, \u201cI wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences. So until we\u2019re there, I think there\u2019s a hard place to say we have huge progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the event, DeGeneres also addressed the scandal that had dogged the end of her daytime talkshow Ellen after 19 seasons in 2022.<\/p>\n

In 2020, former employees accused DeGeneres of fostering a toxic work environment. She apologised to her staff and to the audience, and an internal investigation by parent company Warner led to the departure of three executives \u2013 but the show never quite recovered and ended amid declining ratings.<\/p>\n

DeGeneres had previously commented on the controversy<\/a> in her 2024 US tour, saying she was \u201ckicked out of show business\u201d for being \u201cmean\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, she made similar comments on stage. \u201cNo matter what, any article that came up, it was like, \u2018She\u2019s mean\u2019,\u201d DeGeneres said. \u201cHow do I deal with this without sounding like a victim or \u2018poor me\u2019 or complaining? But I wanted to address it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she had been misconstrued. \u201cI\u2019m a direct person, and I\u2019m very blunt, and I guess sometimes that means that … I\u2019m mean?\u201d<\/p>\n
