Lawn-tractor racing Lawn-tractor racing on P.E.I. raises money for Make-A-Wish Canada <\/p>\nA green light and a burst of red dirt sent drivers into turn one, racing on lawn tractors for a good cause in St. Peter\u2019s Bay, P.E.I.<\/p>\n
Dozens of drivers with the P.E.I. Lawn Tractor Racing Club turned laps at the Grassroots Raceway, with Islanders and tourists watching on. Proceeds from ticket sales went to Make-A-Wish this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s basically a low-dollar NASCAR. We call it grass car,\u201d said Jeff Wilson, one of the club\u2019s directors.<\/p>\n
Wilson said regular mowers might move at 7 km\/h \u2014 a far cry from speeds on race day. The tractors are modified to hit 85 km\/h in the club\u2019s top division, with enhanced brakes and steering.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love it. We race with the grandkids and it\u2019s a family affair,\u201d said driver Clifford MacIsaac. \u201cEveryone is blown away when they come. It\u2019s not what they expect. They expect a couple of lawn mowers, and there are high-tech ones here that are really fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starting at age six, children can race in kid-friendly divisions, at lower horsepower.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw them going around the track. I was like, that looks fun. I want to do that,\u201d said Damien MacDonald Stewart.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can make new friends, and you can just have fun,\u201d said Gemma Creed, who is racing for the second year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very fun activity, and I recommend it,\u201d said Neveah MacDonald Deveaux.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do it for the love of the race,\u201d said Stephan Constable.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just love it,\u201d added Landon Rowe.<\/p>\n
The machines may have small engines, but racing them has a big impact. The P.E.I. Lawn Tractor Racing Club has donated more than $10,000 to local charities over the years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt helps other people. Kids that need clothes,\u201d said Liam Douse.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel good about it because it helps kids in need and makes their day,\u201d added his friend Darrion Campbell.<\/p>\n
The stands were packed for the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no idea where it would go, but it\u2019s amazing,\u201d said spectator Carol Groves.<\/p>\n
Tickets were $10.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cost isn\u2019t an issue,\u201d said Andrew Gopsill. \u201cIt\u2019s great that all the money\u2019s going to charity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some came to support loved ones.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy grandson \u2014 he\u2019s in this race right now,\u201d said Bernie Lamphier, watching on.<\/p>\n
Racing grass cutters is a low-cost way to get started in the hobby.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe problem with car racing today is it\u2019s become so unaffordable for everybody. And this is just wonderful,\u201d said spectator Brian Groves.<\/p>\n
