10 private units plus washrooms for patients, and 20 workforce housing rental suites coming to Campbell River next summer<\/p>\n
Construction has officially begun\u00a0on the Just Like Home Lodge, which will provide housing for patients and their families travelling to Campbell River for medical care not available in their communities.<\/p>\n
On Sept. 10, the Strathcona Regional District, along with partners the\u00a0Campbell River Hospital Foundation and Seymour Pacific Homes, marked the milestone\u00a0at the construction site next to the hospital in Campbell River. Government\u00a0officials, including Mayor Kermit Dahl, North Island MLA Anna Kindy, MP Aaron Gunn, Coun. Ron Kerr, regional district directors and mayors also attended the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Just Like Home Lodge and Workforce Housing will directly benefit patients, families, and healthcare workers across 32 communities and improve healthcare access for more than 57,000 people in our region,” said Mark Baker, SRD board chair. “Today\u2019s groundbreaking is a true celebration of what collaboration and community spirit can achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ceremony\u00a0took place on the traditional unceded territory of the Lig\u02b7i\u0142dax\u030c\u02b7 people, beginning with a ground blessing led by Yaxawidi (Shawn Decaire), hereditary chief of the We Wai Kai Nation, and his son, Kye Decaire.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The new facility\u00a0is set to\u00a0open next summer with ten private units and washrooms. There will also be a shared kitchen, laundry, a day room and communal living spaces.<\/p>\n
In addition to patient housing, the facility will provide workforce housing. This includes\u00a020 rental suites for workforce housing, which range\u00a0from studio to two-bedroom units.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Baker said these self-contained units will make a real difference in recruiting doctors, nurses, and other essential healthcare professionals and help to\u00a0alleviate\u00a0the region’s pressing housing shortage.<\/p>\n
The regional district called the facility and workforce housing a “transformative investment,” which will improve\u00a0patient care and\u00a0strengthen\u00a0the stability of the health-care workforce across the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0$2 million in capital costs were raised\u00a0in partnership with the Campbell River Hospital Foundation.\u00a0This includes the cost for the building, parking, furnishings, laundry and\u00a0storage, internet technology, security cameras, and other contingency costs.<\/p>\n
For those staying at the facility once it opens,\u00a0it will cost a modest amount, which is yet to be determined, states the SRD website.\u00a0<\/p>\n
