{"id":147091,"date":"2025-09-16T02:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T02:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/147091\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T02:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T02:38:08","slug":"nebraska-confirms-states-first-case-of-bird-flu-in-dairy-herd-as-us-outbreak-persists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/147091\/","title":{"rendered":"Nebraska confirms state&#8217;s first case of bird flu in dairy herd as US outbreak persists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nebraska has confirmed its first case of bird flu in a dairy cattle herd as a lingering 18-month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/bird-flu-caused-growing-problems-180528364.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:outbreak;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outbreak<\/a> continues to afflict livestock nationwide, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The state&#8217;s department of agriculture, aided by the USDA\u2019s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/nda.nebraska.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/press\/september2025\/HPAI%20in%20Dairy.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a press release;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a press release<\/a> that it had confirmed the case of highly pathogenic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/local\/maryland\/2025\/01\/30\/what-is-avian-influenza-everything-you-need-to-know-about-bird-flu\/77885111007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:avian influenza;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">avian influenza<\/a> in a central Nebraska herd and that the herd had been quarantined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Though decelerating, cases of H5N1 bird flu have now been confirmed in more than 1,000 herds across 17 U.S. states since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2025\/05\/04\/how-do-you-get-bird-flu\/83216472007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the virus;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the virus<\/a> was initially found in dairy cows in March 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-detections\/hpai-confirmed-cases-livestock\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the USDA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to the USDA<\/a>, including cases this year in Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Michigan and California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The National Veterinary Services Laboratories said the strain resembles one found in California, the department said, adding that with care, dairy cattle typically recover with little to no associated mortality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the threat to humans remains low, the continuing spread of the virus to dairy cattle and other mammals could indicate it\u2019s edging toward becoming communicable among people, a development that a University of Pennsylvania microbiology professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/scientists-wary-bird-flu-pandemic-unfolding-slow-motion-2024-07-01\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:has described;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">has described<\/a> as \u201clike a pandemic unfolding in slow motion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/situation-summary\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:70 people;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">70 people<\/a> have been infected with the virus nationwide, including 41 exposed to the virus by dairy cows. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/video-series\/symptoms-h5n1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Symptoms;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Symptoms<\/a> are similar to the common flu, including fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, eye irritation and tiredness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The virus most commonly spreads among wild birds but can also infect poultry, livestock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/bird-flu-spreads-mammals-raising-concerns-human-transmission-2024-04-03\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:and other mammals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">and other mammals<\/a>, including goats, coyotes and opossums.
