{"id":148687,"date":"2025-09-16T19:17:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T19:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/148687\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T19:17:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T19:17:06","slug":"radio-canada-apologizes-after-reporter-uses-antisemitic-language-on-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/148687\/","title":{"rendered":"Radio-Canada apologizes after reporter uses antisemitic language on air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Radio-Canada\u00a0is apologizing after one of its reporters used antisemitic language during a television broadcast on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Correspondent \u00c9lisa Serret\u00a0was doing a television hit from Washington about U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio&#8217;s visit to Israel \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/marco-rubia-israel-visit-1.7633551\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a trip that came soon after Israeli forces launched strikes on Hamas<\/a> targets in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by the\u00a0host of news\u00a0program Sur le terrain\u00a0why the U.S. has not distanced itself from Israel in the wake of that military action, Serret said in French &#8220;the Israelis, in fact the Jews, finance a lot of American politics&#8221; and control a &#8220;big machine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added that America&#8217;s big cities and Hollywood are &#8220;run by Jews.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/2192735\/mise-au-point-analyse-rdi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement posted to its website<\/a>, Radio-Canada described Serret&#8217;s remarks as &#8220;stereotypical, antisemitic, erroneous and prejudicial allegations against Jewish communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These unacceptable comments contravene Radio-Canada&#8217;s Journalistic Standards and Practices and in no way reflect the opinion of the public broadcaster. As a result, the news department has decided to relieve the journalist of her duties until further notice,&#8221; the French statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are aware that these comments have offended many viewers. We sincerely apologize and regret this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Serret&#8217;s comments drew condemnation from the Quebec chapter of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a Canadian Jewish rights advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p>In a social media post, CIJA said Radio-Canada was disseminating &#8220;antisemitic lies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Identity and Culture Minister Steven Guilbeault, the minister responsible for CBC\/Radio-Canada, said &#8220;antisemitism has no place in Canada&#8221; and Serret&#8217;s remarks were &#8220;pernicious antisemitic tropes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When antisemitic language is used by journalists, or anyone in a position of trust, it risks normalizing hatred in deeply dangerous ways,&#8221;\u00a0 Guilbeault said.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, who was named the government&#8217;s special adviser on Jewish community relations and antisemitism last year, said Serret uttered &#8220;textbook tropes that are antisemitic under the IHRA definition,&#8221; which has been adopted by the Government of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a reference to the <a href=\"https:\/\/holocaustremembrance.com\/resources\/working-definition-antisemitism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance<\/a>, which explicitly states any contention that Jews control\u00a0the media, economy, government or other societal institutions is an example of antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Housefather said it&#8217;s a &#8220;positive development&#8221; that Radio-Canada has apologized, relieved\u00a0Serret of her duties and made clear it is unacceptable to use that sort of language.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Radio-Canada\u00a0is apologizing after one of its reporters used antisemitic language during a television broadcast on Monday.
