And while protein is important, you can get it from a variety of sources, as we learned in this article by Ellie Krieger, M.S., RD,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/how-much-protein-you-need-according-to-a-dietitian\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHow much protein can a person really need<\/a>?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>For this article, I wanted to shed light on fiber\u2019s nutritional value, so I compiled a list of 20 fiber-packed recipes and spoke with Pam Fullenweider, a registered dietitian who specializes in the Mediterranean Diet, to help you reach your daily fiber goals.<\/p>\n<p>There remains the hard truth that Americans fall short on fiber, with most only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK559033\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">getting about half the daily recommended amount<\/a>. A type of carbohydrate that your body can\u2019t fully process, fiber plays an important role in supporting digestion, balancing blood sugar, managing weight, and nurturing a healthy gut microbiome.<\/p>\n<p>The current recommended daily fiber intake is between:<\/p>\n<p>21-25g per day for women ages 19 and older<\/p>\n<p>30-38g per day for men ages 19 and older<\/p>\n<p>Adding fruits, vegetables, <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/collections\/grains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">whole grains<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/collections\/lentils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">legumes<\/a> is a \u201chighly recommended strategy for improving health and reducing the risk of chronic disease,\u201d according to a report on fiber from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11671356\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are protective foods,\u201d explained Fullenweider. \u201cThey\u2019re protecting you from chronic disease. That\u2019s what the fiber is doing in your diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fiber and The Mediterranean Diet<\/p>\n<p>The good news? The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/mediterranean-diet-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mediterranean diet<\/a> lends itself particularly well to fiber intake, as it\u2019s centered around a colorful array of produce, nuts, whole grains, and legumes. As a dietitian, Fullenweider works with clients on balancing their meals and finding flavorful ways to increase their fiber intake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s say you\u2019re having yogurt and eggs for breakfast,\u201d explained Fullenweider. \u201cI would add veggies, berries, and nuts or a nut butter. And then you have this amazing variety of all the different types of fiber, and you\u2019re hitting all cylinders. You\u2019re still getting your protein, but most importantly, you\u2019re getting all those nutrients from the fiber, right? That\u2019s the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, I dug through our library to find some of our most naturally fiber-packed favorites.
