While Jugband Blues didn\u2019t get into Alex Petridis\u2019s top\u00a010 Pink Floyd songs (Ranked!, 12\u00a0September), I was pleased to see it at No 11 in his top\u00a020 list online<\/a>. Petridis describes a Salvation Army band erupting into \u201cfree-form mayhem\u201d as a counterpoint to Syd Barrett\u2019s \u201cdead-eyed voice\u201d. My father, George Whittingham, and his lifelong friend, Maurice Cooper, were part of the ensemble responsible for that sonic mayhem. Not bad for someone who recently celebrated his 99th birthday, and for Maurice, who is 96. Perhaps it\u2019s time for them to get the band back together?

In New Zealand, the signs say \u201cMerge like a zip\u201d, and in Denmark, the white line between a slip road and the main carriageway disappears, indicating that no\u00a0one has right of way and you\u2019re expected to be nice.
