{"id":149718,"date":"2025-09-17T05:41:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T05:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/149718\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T05:41:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T05:41:14","slug":"u-s-to-launch-cusma-consultations-ahead-of-scheduled-trade-pact-review-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/149718\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. to launch CUSMA consultations ahead of scheduled trade pact review &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States is officially starting the process of reviewing the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement as President <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> continues to shake up continental <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade<\/a> with his tariff agenda.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758044768_711_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Trade Representative is set to begin 45 days of public consultations ahead of the mandated review of the trade agreement, better known as <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/cusma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CUSMA<\/a>, next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2025-18010.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A preliminary Federal Register notice<\/a> posted online Tuesday, set for publication Wednesday, said there also will be a public hearing in November.<\/p>\n<p>It marks the first official step toward renegotiating the sweeping trade deal that was signed during the first Trump administration. Trump has praised the deal but also has described it as \u201ctransitional\u201d and has questioned whether it\u2019s still necessary.<\/p>\n<p>The continental deal has shielded Canada and Mexico from the worst of Trump\u2019s efforts to realign trade through massive duties on nations around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>While Canada and Mexico were early targets of Trump\u2019s tariffs, those duties do not apply to goods compliant under the trade pact.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been a surge in the number of businesses looking to ensure their CUSMA compliance. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said the deal puts Canada in an enviable spot compared to other nations \u2014 even nations like the United Kingdom and South Korea which have signed bilateral agreements with the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Canada and Mexico are being hammered by Trump\u2019s separate tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper and automobiles. He said \u201cthe Trump administration was willing to ruffle diplomatic feathers to advance its trade agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first Trump administration required the six-year review be included in the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has indicated it doesn\u2019t expect the process to be easy, and the president has suggested he is looking for a renegotiation rather than a review of some trade irritants.<\/p>\n<p>Carney has also said Canada is looking to change some aspects of the continental trade pact.
