\n\tBBC<\/a> chief Tim Davie<\/a> has called on the corporation, and the broader TV industry, to \u201cadopt a bit of swagger\u201d about its importance to the British economy and society. <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking at the Royal Television Society\u2019s Cambridge Convention, the director general said the BBC should be confident about its mission as it approaches charter renewal talks with the government.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe BBC is not perfect, but it acts as precious venture capital,\u201d he said, opening a two-day conference that has been titled \u2018Where Do We Grow From Here?.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\tDavie told a room full of TV industry luminaries that he was \u201cnot interested in self-survival\u201d during the charter renewal, which will establish the BBC\u2019s funding model, governance, and objectives over the next decade. For the first time, the BBC has said it is open to reforms to the licence fee, the funding mechanism that generated \u00a33.84B ($5.2B) in revenue for the corporation last year.<\/p>\n

\n\tDavie joked that the UK television industry has a Cambridge University PHD in \u201cself-flagellation\u201d and, in a short speech sketching out a positive vision for the creative sector, he talked about it being a \u201cheavyweight\u201d on the global stage, with the BBC being a key part of the story.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe rattled through a raft of statistics, including that the BBC reaches 94% of the UK, that trust in the corporation increased last year, and that public service broadcasters contribute \u00a38B in gross value added to the British economy. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn an apparent nod to a summer of crisis \u2014 when existential questions have been asked about Davie\u2019s leadership by the government after the MasterChef misconduct scandal and Bob Vylan\u2019s \u201cdeath to the IDF\u201d chant at Glastonbury \u2014 he thanked the industry for its backing for the BBC.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDespite all the noise, I have never felt more supported,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tDavie revealed that the BBC has received 870,000 responses to its \u201cOur BBC, Our Future\u201d survey, the findings from which will be central to the broadcaster\u2019s contribution to charter renewal.<\/p>\n

\n\tUK culture secretary Lisa Nandy said last week that the government will launch the charter renewal process before the end of the year, with the BBC expecting a green paper next month.<\/p>\n
