Matt Cameron has addressed his exit from Pearl Jam<\/a>, and given an update on a new Soundgarden<\/a> album featuring vocals from the late Chris Cornell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cameron also expressed his gratitude for \u201cthe crew, staff and fans the world over\u201d, adding: \u201cIt\u2019s been an incredible journey. More to follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following speculation that he had retired from music altogether, Cameron, 62, later confirmed his career status<\/a>: \u201cThank you for the kind words of support and for the record, I\u2019m still an active musician.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, the drummer has spoken about his reason for leaving Pearl Jam during an interview with Billboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was having some issues with [Pearl Jam\u2019s] three-hour shows and constant touring and stuff,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cThat\u2019s definitely an art form unto itself, to be able to do those types of shows\u2026 I\u2019m at a point now where I want to do a face-melting 70-minute set, and that\u2019s kind of what I\u2019m focusing on right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that his departure was amicable, adding: \u201cI definitely gave them a lot of notice. I\u2019ve spoken with Jeff [Ament] and Stone [Gossard] a little bit\u2026 It\u2019s been fine. Hopefully we\u2019ll get back together at some point and have a beer or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron also gave an update on the final album from Soundgarden<\/a>, which bassist Ben Shepherd spoke about earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not a set release date or anything as of yet,\u201d Cameron said of the forthcoming project. \u201cThere were a couple schools of thought, like, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s put out a single\u2019. I think eventually we decided we want to make sure the whole thing is completed before we start releasing singles. I\u2019m excited for people to hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cWe\u2019re definitely over halfway done with it. Kim [Thayil, guitarist] is in the process of finishing his guitar parts; he wants to make sure they get exactly the way he wants them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking about working on the LP \u2013 which will follow Soundgarden\u2019s sixth album, 2012\u2019s \u2018King Animal\u2019 \u2013 Cameron said: \u201cEmotionally it\u2019s been extreme highs and extreme lows.<\/p>\n

\u201cHearing [Cornell\u2019s] voice on these powerful hard rock songs is the most empowering thing in the world for me. Then I listen to his voice soloed up when I\u2019m working on stuff, or if Kim or Ben is working on something, and it all comes back to the fact that he\u2019s not with us and he left us in a way that has so many questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been gut-wrenching but at the same time very empowering.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2023, Soundgarden and Cornell\u2019s estate settled a legal dispute that included the rights to several unreleased final songs by the band<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Cameron is fronting a new band called Is This Real? and continuing to work with Thayil as part of 3rd Secret<\/a> along with Nirvana<\/a>\u2018s Krist Novoselic and more. He is hoping to take the latter group out on the road, per Billboard.<\/p>\n

Pearl Jam have not yet announced their new drummer, and have no live shows scheduled at the time of writing.<\/p>\n

Cameron is set to become a two-time inductee at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in November<\/a>, when Soundgarden will be inducted during a ceremony in LA. He was inducted with Pearl Jam in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The surviving members of Soundgarden will perform live at this year\u2019s event.
