And almost all will do so if global warming hits 2\u00b0C, say scientists<\/a>.<\/p>\n An international team, led by scientists from the University of Exeter<\/a>, assessed 400 reef sites around Florida, Mexico and Bonaire.<\/p>\n The study, published in the journal Nature<\/a>, projects that more than 70% of the region\u2019s reefs will stop growing by 2040 \u2013 and over 99% will do so by 2100 if warming reaches 2\u00b0C or more above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n Scientists say climate change \u2013 along with other issues such as coral disease and deteriorating water quality \u2013 reduces overall reef growth by killing corals<\/a> and impacting colony growth rates.<\/p>\n To understand how changing reef ecology is impacting growth potential \u2013 or how the balance of living organisms translates into reef-building \u2013 researchers analysed fossil reefs from the tropical western Atlantic region to improve understanding of how reef growth rates vary depending on the types of coral present<\/a>.<\/p>\n They then combined that with ecological data from more than 400 modern reef sites around the region to calculate present-day reef growth rates, and to explore how growth rates will change under future climate change, and whether reefs can keep up with future sea-level rise.<\/p>\n Dead reef crest on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. (Chris Perry via SWNS)<\/p>\n Study lead author Professor Chris Perry, of the University of Exeter<\/a>, said: \u201cOur research shows that under current CO2 emission scenarios, most Atlantic coral reefs<\/a> will not only stop growing but many will actually be eroding by mid-century.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the same time, rates of sea-level rise will increase \u2013 and our analysis suggests the growth of reefs will lag behind.<\/p>\n \u201cWith reefs and sea levels moving in opposite directions, water depths above reefs will increase \u2013 raising flooding risks along vulnerable reef-fronted coasts and fundamentally changing nearshore ecosystems.<\/p>\n \u201cResultant water depth increases of around 0.7 metres are projected by the end of this century if global temperature increases exceed 2\u00b0C, and as much as 1.2 metres under higher warming rates.\u201d<\/p>\n He says reef growth is “strongly influenced” by the amount and types of living coral<\/a> present.<\/p>\n Multiple factors, including disease outbreaks and \u201cbleaching\u201d events caused by high temperature,s have changed the makeup of many reefs, depleting key reef-building species.<\/p>\n Study co-author Dr. Lorenzo Alvarez-Filip, of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de M\u00e9xico<\/a> (UNAM), said: \u201cWe are witnessing an alarming decline in both the abundance and diversity of corals across Atlantic coral reefs<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cClimate change is not only accelerating this decline but also worsening the cascading ecological and socio-economic consequences of their loss.\u201d<\/p>\n Widespread bleaching of coral in the Mexican Caribbean. (Lorenzo Alvarez-Filip via SWNS)<\/p>\n By Talker<\/p>\n Co-author Dr. Didier de Bakker, from the University of Exeter<\/a>, said: \u201cThe changes we project would have major impacts along coastlines where reefs presently help limit wave exposure.<\/p>\n \u201cThese changes would also transform the environmental conditions in nearshore lagoons which harbour important habitats such as seagrass beds.\u201d<\/p>\n One way to reverse losses and enhance reef growth is coral restoration<\/a>, according to the research team.<\/p>\n Dr. Alice Webb, also from the University of Exeter<\/a>, said: \u201cThe scale of action required to reverse current coral losses<\/a> is significant.<\/p>\n \u201cTo have meaningful effects on limiting water depth increases, any restoration will need to occur in tandem with effective land and water management, and rapid climate mitigation actions.<\/p>\n “Actions to keep warming below 2\u00b0C are critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
