{"id":151118,"date":"2025-09-17T20:11:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T20:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/151118\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T20:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T20:11:10","slug":"ford-urges-carney-to-keep-100-tariff-on-chinese-evs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/151118\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford urges Carney to keep 100% tariff on Chinese EVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to maintain a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The push comes as Ottawa plans to revisit tariff measures, with Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald recently confirming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/autos\/article\/ottawa-considering-scrapping-tariffs-on-chinese-electric-vehicle-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/autos\/article\/ottawa-considering-scrapping-tariffs-on-chinese-electric-vehicle-tariffs\/\">policy is under review<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last week, a Nanos Research survey for CTV News found 62 per cent of Canadians support removing the tariff if it meant Beijing would ease its restrictions on domestic crops like canola. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/autos\/article\/canadians-buying-fewer-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-vehicles-statcan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/autos\/article\/canadians-buying-fewer-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-vehicles-statcan\/\">Statistics Canada data<\/a> shows EV sales in Canada have dipped to 39.2 per cent, adding further pressure for Carney to potentially consider shifting course.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s at stake for Ontario? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a newly released letter, penned to the prime minister, Ford explains the tariff has been \u201ckey to protecting more than $46 billion in automotive, EV and battery supply chain investments\u201d made since 2020. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Canada\u2019s tariffs on Chinese-made EVs are critical to protecting more than 157,000 direct jobs in Ontario and hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs across the country. For the sake of these workers\u2019 livelihoods, the federal government needs to maintain its 100 per cent tariffs. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x0TUmo5Vao\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/x0TUmo5Vao<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Doug Ford (@fordnation) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fordnation\/status\/1968354456795508766?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 17, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He warned that lifting it would jeopardize \u201cmore than 157,000 direct jobs in Ontario and hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAs you know, China\u2019s pervasive use of non-market policies and practices, including heavy subsidization and low environmental and labour standards, gives its industry unfair advantages over Canadian automotive manufacturers,\u201d Ford wrote. \u201cMaintaining Canada\u2019s 100 per cent tariff on Chinese-made EVs is essential to levelling the playing field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trade tensions deepen<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Canada imposed the 100 per cent tariff on Chinese EVs last October, alongside duties on EV batteries, critical minerals, solar panels and semiconductors. China retaliated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/article\/chinese-tariff-on-canola-seed-comes-into-force-as-farmers-hope-for-resolution\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/article\/chinese-tariff-on-canola-seed-comes-into-force-as-farmers-hope-for-resolution\/\">100 per cent tariff<\/a> on Canadian canola oil and meal, plus additional levies on pork, fish and seafood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the letter, Ford pointed to Mexico\u2019s decision to apply a 50 per cent tariff on vehicles from China as a warning sign for Canada. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cRemoving Canada\u2019s tariffs on Chinese-made EVs risks isolating our automotive sector within North America, putting Canadian auto workers\u2019 jobs at serious risk,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Ford\u2019s consistent stance<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">At the Council of the Federation meeting in Huntsville, Ont., in July, Ford repeated his support for tariffs on Chinese EVs and 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum. He has also taken aim at Mexico in the past, calling it a \u201cbackdoor\u201d for Chinese parts and products entering North America.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mexico is ripping off Canadian and U.S. workers by allowing itself to become a backdoor to cheap Chinese parts and products.
