\n Dr Alexis Bowers, consultant psychiatrist and clinical lead for adult mental health services and ECT at the trust, said that while there are \u201cdifferent views\u201d about the therapy it is a \u201crecognised evidence-based treatment\u201d.\n<\/p>\n
\n The trust issued a statement after Liberal Democrat councillor Michael Lilley decried ECT\u2019s \u2018continued use\u2019 on the Island in a written question to the adult social care, public health and housing needs committee last Thursday (September 11).\n<\/p>\n
\n ECT involves running electrical currents though the brain to bring about a brief seizure.\n<\/p>\n
\n Cllr Lilley, a former mental health professional who currently serves as the Isle of Wight Council\u2019s mental health champion, called the procedure \u2018barbaric\u2019 and said it was based on \u2018poor medical\/psychiatric evidence\u2019.\n<\/p>\n
\n He said ECT is \u2018still actively administered\u2019 at Sevenacres, a mental health unit at the St Mary\u2019s Hospital site and referenced recent research from the University of East London (UEL), described as the \u2018largest-ever\u2019 international survey of ECT recipients.\n<\/p>\n
\n UEL has said the study, led by Dr John Read, reveals that \u2018most patients and their families report little or no benefit from the treatment\u2019, and in many instances say it \u2018made things worse\u2019.\n<\/p>\n
\n The trust\u2019s Dr Bowers said: \u201cECT is a recognised evidence-based treatment recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for people with severe mental illness where the patient chooses ECT based on past treatment experience, where other approaches have not worked or when urgent treatment is needed.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt is given under general anaesthetic following careful assessment by senior clinicians.\u00a0It is provided to informal consenting patients or to those under the Mental Health Act with appropriate safeguards.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cWe recognise there are different views about ECT, but for many people it is a treatment that can be life-saving and enables recovery.
