Actor Paul Walter Hauser (The Naked Gun, Cruella<\/a>) is set to join Weapons<\/a> director Zach Cregger\u2019s upcoming Resident Evil movie, Deadline<\/a> reports today.<\/p>\n

Hauser joins previously announced lead \u00a0Austin Abrams (Wolfs, the upcoming Whalefall<\/a>), who reteams with his Weapons director.<\/p>\n

Zach Cregger\u2019s\u00a0Resident Evil hits theaters\u00a0September 18, 2026.<\/p>\n

Plot details are under wraps, but Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0back to the big screen after seven live-action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, with Cregger directing from a script co-written with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead, Day Shift).<\/p>\n

Cregger\u2019s\u00a0Resident Evil is said to \u201ctake the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,\u201d but the filmmaker doesn\u2019t intend on being a slave to the franchise\u2019s lore.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a gigantic\u00a0Resident Evil game fan. I\u2019ve played them all. I don\u2019t know how many times I\u2019ve just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it. I\u2019m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games,\u201d Cregger recently said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.\u201d<\/p>\n

The filmmaker also warned to expect a very different type of movie from Barbarian and Weapons. \u201cThis movie follows a person from point A to point B. It\u2019s like a real-time journey, where you just go deeper and deeper into the depths of Hell,\u201d Cregger continues. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really a love letter to the games. Because I love those games. This is a story that I would\u2019ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I\u2019m doing it because I think this movie is going to be fucking awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the pic. Constantin\u2019s Robert Kulzer will produce alongside Vertigo Entertainment\u2019s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions\u2019 Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
