Chase Elliott crashed out of this past Saturday\u2019s NASCAR<\/a> Cup Series Bristol Night Race after contact with John Hunter Nemechek sent him crashing into the outside wall. Elliott spoke with NBC Sports shortly after the incident, and he assumed that his playoff run was over. <\/p>\n

In reality, Elliott had enough of a buffer that his playoff spot was in no real jeopardy. But Elliott didn\u2019t seem to know that. Rick Ware Racing competition director Tommy Baldwin found that interesting. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was funny with Chase, he\u2019s getting interviewed and he didn\u2019t even know if he was in or out of the playoffs. He\u2019s getting ready to go home,\u201d Baldwin said on Tuesday\u2019s Door Bumper Clear<\/a> podcast. \u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018Well, I\u2019m done.\u2019 I think it was Parker [Kligerman] who was interviewing him [and told him], \u2018No, you\u2019re not.\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m not?\u2019 He was getting ready to leave. He was like, \u2018I guess I\u2019ll stay around and wait.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase Elliott makes it through Round of 16 amid trouble at Bristol<\/p>\n

Jeff Burton, who was on the call for NBC Sports, said it showed the difference in how drivers choose to operate. Elliott was locked in on what was happening inside his race car, rather than what the points situation was.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was fascinating,\u201d Burton said. \u201cI looked at Steve [Letarte] and we can push a button and talk just amongst ourselves\u2026 and I said, \u2018How the hell can he not know?\u2019 That shocked me that he didn\u2019t know, but it shows you the different approaches of drivers. He just comes in, gonna do his job and leave. He says I don\u2019t need to know all that stuff, I\u2019m just gonna go do the best I can and whatever happens, happens. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 That\u2019s his mentality and it\u2019s worked really well, right? I think he trusts his team, like, y\u2019all got all of that, I\u2019m gonna go pay attention to this and drive the race car.\u201d<\/p>\n

The points have reset for the Round of 12.
