to invest in UK grassroots basketball | Sport England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NBA to invest in UK grassroots basketball<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision follows talks between the NBA Commissioner and Prime Minister Keir Starmer in July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our chief executive has welcomed a \u00a35 million investment into grassroots basketball in the UK from the NBA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This commitment from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">America\u2019s National Basketball Association<\/a>\u00a0(NBA) is aimed at grassroots development and fan engagement programmes through to 2028, and expands on their existing programming that reaches more than 50,000 young people across the UK annually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The \u00a35m will be added to a \u00a35m allocation from the UK Government out of their already-announced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportengland.org\/news-and-inspiration\/chair-welcomes-major-government-investment-grassroots-sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a3400m investment over the next four years<\/a>\u00a0into community sports facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">News of the NBA\u2019s investment was announced today as part of the US State Visit and points to a bright future for the sport in the country, according to our chief executive Simon Hayes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe welcome this exciting investment into basketball in England,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe support of an organisation with the power and prestige of the NBA will have a huge influence and this funding will help more people enjoy the benefits of playing the sport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBasketball is already one of the country\u2019s most popular team sports, thriving in inner city areas where facilities are often limited, and we\u2019ve seen strong growth in young people playing since the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYesterday\u2019s announcement will build on this progress, and we look forward to working with the Government to ensure this funding has the biggest possible impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The investment comes as a result of talks between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government\u2019s \u00a35m investment comes in the first year of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/game-changer-for-the-nation\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Community Sport Facilities Programme<\/a>\u00a0and includes basketball and basketball-led multi-sport facilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NBA to invest in
