Paul Azinger was one player not keen on a meeting with President Clinton at the White House. The impasse was broken the night before when he turned up to a team dinner in a Clinton mask. The meeting went ahead, but there was more melodrama when Watson declined to sign European player Sam Torrance’s menu at the gala dinner, saying he would rather do it in private to avoid a deluge of similar requests.

Come the actual golf there was a Friday fog delay. “I thought Payne and Paul were going to be our star players, but I remember Payne’s eyes were wide open with anxiety by the time they teed off,” Watson says.
