\n Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor in Manhattan and the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey<\/a>, has been fired from her job in the Southern District of New York, according to people familiar with the situation.\n <\/p>\n \n Comey was a prosecutor in the case against accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> and more recently against Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n \n The reason for her firing was not immediately clear, but a person familiar with the situation said being a Comey is untenable in this administration given her father James Comey is \u201cconstantly going after the administration.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n The former FBI chief, a Donald Trump critic, is currently under investigation<\/a> for possible false statements to Congress. He was separately questioned in May by the US Secret Service after he posted a photo on social media<\/a> showing seashells on a beach that spelled out \u201c86 47,\u201d which he has denied was a call for violence against the president.\n <\/p>\n \n Maurene Comey\u2019s dismissal comes as Trump faces growing pressure<\/a> to release more information on Epstein, the disgraced financier. The Justice Department last week released a memo<\/a> that there was no Epstein \u201cclient list,\u201d and the Trump administration announced that it didn\u2019t plan to release any more documents in the investigation.\n <\/p>\n \n Epstein is a convicted sex offender whose criminal case has long captured significant public attention. In 2019, while he was awaiting trial in a federal criminal case, Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at New York\u2019s Metropolitan Correctional Center. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, and his death was ruled a suicide.\n <\/p>\n \n Maurene Comey was a lead prosecutor on the investigation and prosecution of Epstein and his former girlfriend and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was convicted and is serving a 20-year sentence. She has appealed.\n <\/p>\n \n Earlier Wednesday, Trump said in a post on social media the controversy around Epstein is \u201cbullsh*t\u201d and said that his supporters who care about it are \u201cweaklings.\u201d The president also attacked the credibility of the federal investigation into Epstein on Tuesday, claiming that the files \u201cwere made up by Comey, they were made up by Obama, they were made up by Biden (administration).\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Many of the president\u2019s supporters hoped that releasing additional information on the case would implicate other high-profile figures, or undercut the notion that Epstein killed himself.\n <\/p>\n
