{"id":157016,"date":"2025-09-20T12:26:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T12:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/157016\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T12:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T12:26:07","slug":"ontario-flooring-store-leaves-customers-in-a-lurch-after-closing-without-notice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/157016\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario flooring store leaves customers in a lurch after closing without notice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pat Foran reports on the abrupt closure of Decorama Flooring in Bowmanville, Ont., leaving customers without refunds or the flooring they paid for. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A flooring store in Durham Region has abruptly closed its doors without warning, leaving customers without refunds or the flooring they paid for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI have three children and a home that currently has no floors,\u201d said Shawna Davidovich of Bowmanville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She and her husband paid in advance $7,250 to Decorama Flooring located in Bowmanville and were expecting to have the flooring installed in the weeks ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But Davidovich said when she called to schedule her delivery, she got a major surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI actually called at 11 p.m. at night, and a bailiff answered and said, \u2018We are terminating this place.\u2019 So we came the next day, and the locks on the doors had been changed, and there was a sign that said he hadn\u2019t paid the rent,\u201d Davidovich recounted to CTV News Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Heather Rudd had also paid in advance $8,500 to Decorama Flooring and was expecting her flooring to be delivered and installed next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI was very upset,\u201d said the Oshawa resident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSamples were brought out to the house. I thought everything was flowing just fine, but now, not so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Rudd and Davidovich are just two of what is believed to be many customers who paid in advance for flooring.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PVZLMQXW5RG5BCJVZ4PVLHOA4Y.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Decorama Flooring customers Shawna Davidovich (left) and Heather Rudd are seeking answers after Decorama Flooring closed without notice, leaving them out of thousands of dollars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear why the longtime business closed its doors, but customers say they were given no advance notice that there was a problem. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CTV News called the store, but there is now a message that says, \u201cThis number is no longer in service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Doug Hoyes, a licensed insolvency trustee with Hoyes Michalos, said many businesses are feeling financial pressures due to inflation, rising prices and trade tensions with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere are definitely more business bankruptcies than there were a year, or two or even three years ago,\u201d said Hoyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added that while customers may be hopeful to get their money back when a company goes under, consumers are generally considered unsecured creditors who are least likely to get refunds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"> \u201cIn a bankruptcy, there is an order of priorities. The government gets their money first. Banks get their money second because they\u2019re a secured creditor.
