{"id":157468,"date":"2025-09-20T17:38:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T17:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/157468\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T17:38:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T17:38:11","slug":"pennsylvania-detectives-killed-in-an-ambush-remembered-for-saving-lives-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/157468\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania detectives killed in an ambush remembered for saving lives &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11434648\/pennsylvania-police-shooting-leaves-3-dead-2-seriously-injured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">three detectives killed this week<\/a> in one of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pennsylvania\u2019s<\/a> deadliest days for police this century are men who will be missed for their humility, hard work and willingness to help others, say those who knew them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298208_703_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The detectives \u2014 Mark Baker, Cody Becker and Isaiah Emenheiser \u2014 were lauded by local law enforcement officials as pillars of the Northern York County Regional Police Department, where they had served nearly six decades combined.<\/p>\n<p>They had saved lives before and, a prosecutor said, were doing that again when they <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11434648\/pennsylvania-police-shooting-leaves-3-dead-2-seriously-injured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">walked into an ambush as they searched for a 24-year-old man<\/a> wanted in a stalking case.<\/p>\n<p>The department\u2019s chief, Dave Lash, said the men \u201crepresented the best of policing. They served with professionalism, dedication and courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All were fathers, leaving behind wives and eight kids combined.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tDetective Sgt. Cody Becker<\/p>\n<p>Becker, 39, had served with the department for 16 years and had been a big name in his home town of Spring Grove going back to high school, when he was a star athlete for the Rockets in football, baseball and wrestling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo know Cody was to know a man of unmatched dedication, grit, and unwavering selflessness,\u201d his former wrestling coaches said in a statement on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on World<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>His high school football legend includes intercepting a pass from\u00a0Chad Henne\u00a0\u2014 who went on to quarterback in the NFL \u2014 and returning it for a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>But he was most accomplished in wrestling.<\/p>\n<p>Becker went on to wrestle at Millersville University, even qualifying for the NCAA\u2019s Division 1 wrestling tournament in 2007. He returned to Spring Grove to mentor wrestlers there, an example of what the coaches say was unmatched humility and selflessness, \u201calways putting others before himself \u2014 traits that carried through every aspect of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after joining the police force, Becker was honoured for rescuing a mother and three children who were trapped on the third floor of a burning apartment building. I mean, that was the big thing for him is he knew he was making a difference and he knew that he was helping people,\u201d Ziegler said.<\/p>\n<p>Becker was also the nicest person you were ever going to meet, he said. Ziegler recalled that when Becker heard Ziegler was struggling with his family and his mental health, Becker immediately went to see Ziegler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that really does exemplify Cody. If you were a friend of Cody\u2019s, Cody had your back for life,\u201d Ziegler said.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Mark Baker<\/p>\n<p>Baker, 53, started his career with the Philadelphia Police Department in 2001 and moved to the Northern York County Regional department in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounting down the days to retirement,\u201d he said with a smile on a computer forensics podcast last year.<\/p>\n<p>On the force, he started as a \u201cstreet officer\u201d and then became a computer forensics investigation specialist, at least in part because of his aptitude with the office hardware.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been into computers, that\u2019s kind of how everybody\u2019s story starts, I think,\u201d he told the podcast host. \u201cI was the one to set up the Wi-Fi passwords, and when they had a printer issue, \u2018call Baker in,\u2019 so I\u2019d come in off the street and fix their printer issues, and that\u2019s kind of how it all began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He recalled realizing that he would need training to be a computer forensics investigation specialist in 2007 after getting in hot water with the district attorney for how he copied evidence from a seized computer.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11436984\/renewing-mortgage-bank-of-canada-rate-cut\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758389891_770_BoC-Sept-2025.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tRenewing your mortgage? He loved hunting and fishing: \u201cAnything to get me outdoors is just fantastic for me,\u201d he said on the podcast.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, he and 13 fellow officers were given a commendation for resolving a volatile seven-hour standoff when they arrested an armed man without gunfire who had barricaded himself inside his house.<\/p>\n<p>A sister-in-law, Kimberly Crowley, attended a Thursday night vigil for the officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was just all around a good person,\u201d she told The New York Times. \u201cHe just wanted to serve his community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Isaiah Emenheiser<\/p>\n<p>Emenheiser, 43, had served 20 years on the force after graduating from York College.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He loved working out, once posting a photo of himself with <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/Hulk-Hogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hulk Hogan<\/a> in a gym while on vacation in Clearwater, Florida. According to one friend, the two men had logged nearly 10,000 hours in the gym together during the course of their 24-year friendship.<\/p>\n<p>That friend, Cody Bright, said on Facebook that Emenheiser had made him welcome in his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsaiah remains the hardest working most selfless man I\u2019ve ever met.
