{"id":162738,"date":"2025-09-23T02:16:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T02:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/162738\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T02:16:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T02:16:13","slug":"suspension-of-canada-post-flyer-delivery-impacts-calgary-election-campaigns-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/162738\/","title":{"rendered":"Suspension of Canada Post flyer delivery impacts Calgary election campaigns &#8211; Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several campaigns in Calgary\u2019s upcoming municipal election are contending with challenges created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/canada-post\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Post<\/a> labour dispute, with thousands of flyers going undelivered or sitting in a warehouse.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298208_703_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have been embroiled in a lengthy labour dispute, with CUPW announcing last week that postal workers would neither process nor deliver unaddressed flyers, or neighbourhood mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been almost four weeks since we provided Canada Post with our latest global offers, and we\u2019ve yet to hear anything meaningful in response,\u201d CUPW said in a statement. \u201cWith Canada Post abandoning bargaining once again, it gives us no choice but to ramp up the pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a municipal election less than a month away in Calgary, the situation has had an impact on candidates\u2019 and campaigns\u2019 ability to get their message to voters.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Calgary Party, one of three parties registered in the upcoming election, said it had 500,000 campaign flyers stuck in various Canada Post warehouses across the city due to the labour dispute.<\/p>\n<p>According to the party\u2019s mayoral candidate Brian Thiessen, the party requested an exemption for political materials across Alberta, which was declined.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298209_554_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a real opportunity to set aside differences and ensure that the public got to hear from all the candidates,\u201d Thiessen told Global News. \u201cPretty disappointed in the postal workers. I think they could\u2019ve done a better job with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Calgary<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Around 300,000 flyers were eventually returned to the party, Thiessen said, but it would cost up to $80,000 to have 200,000 flyers reprinted and sent through another service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had divided them into warehouses all over the city so they were unable to locate them,\u201d he said. \u201cThe salt in the wound is they haven\u2019t given our money back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Canada Post said it is \u201cdisappointed\u201d with CUPW\u2019s decision to suspend neighbourhood mail and noted the move \u201cimpacts thousands of Canadian businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It noted campaign flyers are considered \u201cunaddressed mail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand the degree to which this ban on Neighbourhood Mail is impacting many businesses and organizations, however this is a legal strike activity that CUPW chose to undertake,\u201d said the statement from Canada Post. \u201cFlyers currently in the network are being securely held for the duration of the delivery ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11440193\/autism-causes-trump-kennedy\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758593773_294_55ac428de08dd50f6bec53dde74d7ff17161a68530770972cbe27df8855c9d62_04803f.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tAutism and its causes: What to know as Trump announces new U.S. guidelines\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11439299\/alberta-wildfire-dunmore-emergency-alert-evacuate\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758593773_900_CP173964549.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tEvacuation orders given to some Alberta residents located near wildfire\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Communities First is also feeling the effects of the ban, with thousands of flyers for its candidates also being held by Canada Post.<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s Ward 4 candidate, Jeremy Wong, said he is working to get flyers reprinted and sent to households, but added it would be a difficult task for volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scale is huge,\u201d Wong told Global News. \u201cThere\u2019s 100,000 people in my ward and 40,000 households, so imagine using volunteers to go house to house delivering all those flyers.
