Golf Tournament aims to raise up to $30,000 for a regional hospice house in Cranbrook<\/p>\n

After years of fundraising for the\u00a0East Kootenay Foundation for\u00a0Health, Cranbrook’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament is turning over a\u00a0new chapter to support another\u00a0cause.\u00a0<\/p>\n

144 golfers teed off at the Cranbrook Golf Club\u00a0on July 18 to raise money for a regional hospice house. Golfers took part in a\u00a0putting contest and live and silent auction, and had a chance at winning vehicles\u00a0from\u00a0Jack Carter Northstar GM, if they scored a hole in one on a par three. The event\u00a0aims to raise $20,000 to $30,000 for the hospice house.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The event was organized by local businessowner\u00a0Trevor Gordon, and\u00a0Jack Carter Northstar sales manager\u00a0Brandon Laurie. Gordon formerly\u00a0owned\u00a0Boston Pizza Cranbrook, until he sold it in\u00a0February and bought\u00a0Opa! of Greece.\u00a0The tournament has raised\u00a0over\u00a0$310,000 for the\u00a0East Kootenay Foundation for Health since it began\u00a014 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chairman of the Cranbrook and Kimberley Hospice Society <\/a>Greg Sternig said the\u00a0hospice house project is\u00a0gaining momentum. The group met with the City of Cranbrook in mid-July\u00a0and were given a verbal offer for a piece of property near Moir Park. Now\u00a0they’ve turned\u00a0their attention to fundraising to $8 to $10 million in project costs.<\/p>\n

Sternig said plans for the\u00a0hospice house include 10 beds to support palliative patients as they receive\u00a0end-of-life care, as well as a kitchen and\u00a0private family room.\u00a0Sunrise Rotary is keen on\u00a0building\u00a0a garden on the property.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The house would\u00a0serve the entire region, including\u00a0communities in the Elk Valley, with licenced nurses\u00a0and care aids to\u00a0provide comfort for residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Society is searching for major\u00a0donors to contribute to making the project a reality. Fundraising is still in the beginning stages and only a handful of community events have pitched in. A\u00a0dinner at Colombo Lodge and an auction <\/a>of Brian Clarkson’s photography helped launch the fundraiser last year. Donors will have\u00a0their names displayed\u00a0at\u00a0the hospice house.<\/p>\n

Sternig\u00a0said palliative care services\u00a0are desperately\u00a0needed in the region, as there’s\u00a0no hospice house east of the Okanagan. Meanwhile, the\u00a0East Kootenay Regional Hospital only has a few beds designated for end-of-life needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0“It’ll free up beds at the hospital and relieve pressure on staff,” said Sternig.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Society is working closely with Interior Health to move the project forward.<\/p>\n

The hospice house project is being led by the Society board under president George Watson’s leadership. A 10-person\u00a0steering committee is helping guide the project, with input from the business community and professionals with\u00a0backgrounds in\u00a0finance, law and construction.<\/p>\n
