US vice-president JD Vance has warned that Donald Trump is \u201cgrowing incredibly impatient\u201d with Moscow amid stalled efforts to resolve the Ukraine war. Trump \u201cdoesn\u2019t feel like they\u2019re putting enough on the table to end the war\u201d, Vance said in North Carolina. \u201cIf the Russians refuse to negotiate in good faith, I think it\u2019s going to be very, very bad for their country. That\u2019s what the president made clear.\u201d In a meeting earlier on Wednesday in New York, US secretary of state Marco Rubio apparently clashed with his Russian counterpart, calling for the \u201ckilling to stop\u201d and demanding Moscow \u201ctake meaningful steps toward a durable resolution\u201d.<\/p>\n
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov fired back and \u201cstressed the unacceptability of the schemes promoted by Kyiv and some European capitals aimed at prolonging the conflict\u201d, according to a readout of their conversation supplied by the Russian side. Trump unexpectedly suggested at the UN on Tuesday after meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine could not only retake all of the territory it lost to Russia militarily since the 2022 Russian invasion but take even more<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Ukrainian president praised Trump following the surprise pivot but cautioned that Nato alone could not underwrite his country\u2019s security. \u201cBecause international institutions are too weak, this madness continues,\u201d Zelenskyy told the general assembly. \u201cEven being part of the longstanding military alliance doesn\u2019t automatically mean you are safe.\u201d He said he had a \u201cgood meeting\u201d with Trump. \u201cOf course we are doing everything to make sure Europe truly helps and of course we count on the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n Zelenskyy appealed to global leaders to intervene<\/a> to prevent Russia from leading the world through \u201cthe most destructive arms race in human history\u201d, warning that the combination of drone technology and artificial intelligence would end in catastrophe, report Patrick Wintour<\/a>, Oliver Holmes<\/a>, Pjotr Sauer<\/a> and Jennifer Rankin<\/a>. The Kremlin also pushed back at Trump\u2019s characterisation of Russia as a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d. \u201cThe idea that Ukraine can recapture something is, from our point of view, mistaken,\u201d Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. He bristled at the accusation Russia was weak, saying it was a \u201creal bear\u201d, while conceding Russia\u2019s economy was \u201cexperiencing tensions and problems\u201d.<\/p>\n Ukraine and Syria formally restored diplomatic relations as their leaders met on the sidelines of the UN general assembly, Zelenskyy said. Ukraine broke off relations with Syria in 2022 after ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad\u2019s government recognised the independence of swathes of occupied Ukraine following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion.
