A group of top-10 athletes, including Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Jack Draper, sent a second letter to the four Grand Slam tournaments demanding a bigger share of revenues, enhanced benefits, and a stronger voice in decision-making. The letter, dated July 30, sets clear targets for prizemoney, pensions, health, and maternity contributions, and comes amid ongoing tension over player compensation.

Players demand higher Grand Slam prizemoney and benefits

The letter calls for players’ share of Grand Slam revenue to rise from 16% to 22% by 2030. If accepted, this would see the Australian Open prize pool exceed $100 million and the US Open surpass $150 million. Combined, the four Slams had a total prize pool of $440 million in 2025, a number that could exceed $500 million within the next five years under the proposed changes. Beyond money, the players are also pushing for $12 million annually in contributions to pension, health, and maternity benefits, marking a significant step toward long-term financial security for athletes.“This is a necessary next step to guarantee accountability from all parties,” the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) said, “and accelerate long-overdue reform across the entire tennis ecosystem.” The second letter was co-signed by players such as Amanda Anisimova, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton, highlighting broad support among tennis’ top talents. Novak Djokovic, who co-founded the PTPA, did not sign this second letter, though he was the sole signatory of the first letter sent in March.

Dialogue with tournament organizers intensifies

The players are working with consultant Larry Scott, former WTA chair and CEO, to negotiate with tournament leaders from Wimbledon, Roland-Garros, the Australian Open, and the US Open. All four organizations responded to the letter. In its reply, the USTA highlighted its commitment to increasing compensation, pointing to a 57% rise in the US Open prize pool over the past five years. “This year’s significant increase to $90 million reflects the addition of an extra day to the main draw singles competition and the resulting contribution made by players,” wrote Brian Vahaly and Stacey Allaster. The discussion comes amid ongoing legal battles, including an antitrust lawsuit filed by the PTPA against the men’s and women’s tours, with the four Grand Slam organizers now added as defendants. The goal is clear: ensure players receive a fairer share of the sport’s rapidly growing revenues while gaining meaningful input in decisions that affect their careers. As Alcaraz, Sabalenka, Gauff, and Sinner lead the charge, tennis faces a pivotal moment where the balance of power could finally shift toward its athletes. Also Read: Is Connor McDavid losing patience?
