{"id":170219,"date":"2025-09-26T08:32:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T08:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/170219\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T08:32:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T08:32:12","slug":"b-c-residents-living-near-quarry-say-dumped-biosolids-smell-like-a-dead-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/170219\/","title":{"rendered":"B.C. residents living near quarry say dumped biosolids smell \u2018like a dead body\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tDescrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>Residents who live south of <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/nanaimo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nanaimo,<\/a> B.C., say they are concerned about a strong odour coming from a nearby quarry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298208_703_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Biosolids, which are stabilized products recovered at the end of the wastewater treatment process, are being dumped at the quarry from the Greater Victoria Sewage Treatment Facility.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of the small community of Cassidy say it is creating a stinky problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a thick, heavy, odorous smell, enough for you to want to close your windows,\u201d resident Nicolas Herman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s worse when it rains; it seems like it activates the smell more so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Resident Debbie Martel said they first noticed the smell earlier this summer, but were never notified of the dumping process or the environmental impact from the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it polluting the environment? facility\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to Global News, the\u00a0Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals (MCM) said work is being done at the site, using the biosolids along biosolids is managed responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince March, MCM inspectors have conducted two on-site inspections focused on the mixing, application, and seeding process,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey carefully reviewed the treatment area and confirmed that, while a faint odour was detected near the application site, it did not extend beyond the immediate area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Residents disagree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt smelled like a dead body,\u201d Martel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd why should we have to put up
