It has lost <a href=\"https:\/\/pws.byu.edu\/great-salt-lake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">73% of its water and 60% of its surface area<\/a> since the mid-19th century due to excessive water extraction. What was once a keystone ecosystem \u2014 sustaining rainfall and providing habitat for millions of migratory birds \u2014 is now at risk of disappearing completely.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz400043b6nl6vmjwx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar has documented the unfolding disaster. His atmospheric photographs show shallow waters, bare ground and toxic dust. He calls it \u201ca lament for our dying planet.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz400053b6nih5a70jt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His series, titled \u201cThe End,\u201d has won the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/prix.pictet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Prix Pictet<\/a>, a global award for photography and sustainability.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz400063b6nb060uc1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In its 11th year, the award focuses on a different sustainability issue each edition. This year\u2019s theme was \u201cStorm.\u201d Twelve works were shortlisted and the winner, Jaar, was awarded 100,000 Swiss Francs ($124,000).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz400073b6n8y77g535@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Michael Benson, director of Prix Pictet, told CNN via email that storms have become a common feature in many people\u2019s lives. \u201cIt is the dramatic expression of nature\u2019s wild side which is dramatically amplified by the dramatic disappearance of native species, the alarming loss of Arctic ice and the increasing frequency of wildfires.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz400083b6nq3mkushq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is also the defining characteristic of our age where we seem to be forever holding our breath in the anticipation of some unspeakable horror to come.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz400093b6npb1ne136@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The theme was taken literally by photographers with works spotlighting the natural phenomenon of storms and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Italian photographer Marina Caneve looked at the long-term impact of the floods and landslides that devastated the Dolomites in northern Italy in 1966, and the inevitability of future catastrophes. While US-born Camille Seaman photographed supercell thunderstorms that can produce hail the size of grapefruits.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/camille-seaman-the-big-cloud.jpg\" alt=\"A giant stormcloud over a farm in Nebraska.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3000\" width=\"4500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz4000a3b6nff6f0zar@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There were also more metaphorical realizations of \u201cstorm,\u201d with representations of political upheaval or social unrest. For instance, Hungarian photographer Balazs Gardi\u2019s powerful chronicle of the post-election attack on the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz4000b3b6nzpcls9su@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cImages of social divisions arise out of issues of sustainability,\u201d said Benson. \u201cFor example, as people are forced from their homes by rising water levels or intense heat, migration increases which in turn gives rise to division and social discord with which we are all too familiar today.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz4000c3b6n6az87jcu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While most of the shortlisted works show devastation, displacement and social disorder, they are also a potential tool for change.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz4000d3b6n8ew8lz6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have become increasingly numb to the problems caused by the global climate crisis,\u201d said Benson. \u201cThese images cut through that numbness, move the debate beyond language and convey the urgent need for action.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfzlxvz4000e3b6nmmgl5ixr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The shortlisted works are being exhibited at London\u2019s Victoria &amp; Albert Museum, from today until October 19, 2025.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Utah\u2019s Great Salt Lake is retreating fast.
