That\u2019s right. Move a river. But what started as an ambitious flood management project has become a $1.5-billion effort to also renew the area\u2019s ecological and Indigenous past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">This weekend was the opening of the first 50 acres of Biidaasige Park. Biidaasige is an Anishinaabemowin word that means \u201csunlight shining toward us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/FNFAH4DQVJC7NHFKGWMJXWJJFE.JPG?auth=73359217309fc6e599a39d446b836de6c2814583eaceb0c5cd46e5e11b135e53&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Biidaasige Park\u2019s playground nears completion on July 17, 2025, as preparations remain underway ahead of its public opening in Toronto\u2019s Port Lands.Sammy Kogan\/The Globe and Mail<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Alex Bozikovic is The Globe\u2019s architecture critic and has been following this project since the beginning. In a recent edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-morning-update-how-to-move-a-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-morning-update-how-to-move-a-river\/\">Morning Update newsletter<\/a>, he tells us that this isn\u2019t just about a river but the transformation of the city. He explores what the project can teach us. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cFirst, that we have the tools to mitigate the effects of climate change by reshaping the urban fabric itself,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe Don River is prone to flooding, in part because it was hemmed in and its wetlands paved more than a century ago. We\u2019ve documented First Nations\u2019 ceremonial activities, returning wildlife and the emerging new ecosystem,\u201d wrote Vid Ingelevics, a visual artist, former educator and now professor emeritus at Toronto Metropolitan University. \u201cAll of this work has been carried out through ever-changing and sometimes challenging weather conditions on a site that, for the first few years, existed mainly as fields of mud and dust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/QOJPCFCU3ZA3HKX3GUKISMXZ6A.jpg?auth=f43933e4d6146fdf8b3b5fbe835af62276ed127a6c3a6ce54cf552b5327f80a8&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">The shift from large-scale machinery used to demolish buildings and excavate and line the new river to labour on a more human scale. More than 300 questions were submitted as of September. The first batch of answers tackles 30 of them. They can be found with the help of a search tool developed by The Globe that makes use of artificial intelligence to match readers\u2019 questions with the closest answer drafted.
