Florian Wirtz<\/a> has opened up on talks with Arne Slot<\/a> about his early struggles to adapt at Liverpool, with a theory as to why he is yet to produce consistently.<\/p>\n

Wirtz has certainly not performed poorly since his \u00a3116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen<\/a>, but the clamour around his transfer has ensured a higher level of scrutiny.<\/p>\n

Given he is yet to score or assist since his debut in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace<\/a> the No. 7 has unsurprisingly attracted criticism.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Sky Germany<\/a>, Wirtz admitted the difficulty he has faced in adjusting to life in the Premier League<\/a> and the belief he gained from a conversation with Slot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI recently talked to the coach about it, and he suggested why I might not be able to get into the situations I normally get into,\u201d the playmaker revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is, that I\u2019m making the game fast with a dribble or a pass. He said it could be because we press a lot and I run a lot.<\/p>\n

\"LIVERPOOL,<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, the running stats: I\u2019m always at the top there because I try to push hard and do what the coach asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need a lot of strength and energy for that, so when I have the ball I might be lacking a little bit.<\/p>\n

\u201c[He said] that it will simply come step by step, as I play more games, get fitter, be able to do things more easily, and then, when I have the ball, be fit enough and recovered enough to push hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is a valid explanation, with Wirtz required to be more involved off the ball than he was at Leverkusen, while also playing in a league that is considerably more intense all round.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Leverkusen I could sometimes, not rest, but jog back a bit. I\u2019ve gotten a scolding from Xabi now and then if I didn\u2019t sprint back completely,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, I can\u2019t afford to rest, and so I have to take every possible route.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why Slot left Wirtz out of the Merseyside derby<\/p>\n

Fortunately he has joined a Liverpool side in flying form and with a head coach and backroom staff who have a strong understanding of load management and the value of patience.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the [Atletico Madrid] game, he told me I wouldn\u2019t start [against Everton<\/a>] because he wanted to control the load a bit and see which game I could play better in,\u201d Wirtz said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe decided on the Champions League<\/a> game, that I would start there and then sit on the bench in the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fully understood that. I was able to recover a bit and didn\u2019t have to exert myself as much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Players are clearly not impervious to outside criticism, particularly those of Wirtz\u2019s generation who have been brought up immersed in social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to hear it all the time, \u2018give it time, give it time\u2019,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead, I simply try to do better each time than before.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd sometimes there are phases where maybe not everything goes your way; I haven\u2019t had that very often in my career.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I\u2019ve gotten through it \u2013 that\u2019s perhaps harsh to say, because I\u2019m not playing badly, I just haven\u2019t got the goal contributions yet \u2013 it will come eventually, and then everything will be fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that I\u2019d like to have more so far, but I\u2019m patient, and as I just said, I know full well that I can play football well.<\/p>\n
