{"id":172152,"date":"2025-09-27T04:15:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T04:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/172152\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T04:15:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T04:15:10","slug":"alexander-sets-cfl-record-in-als-win-over-stamps-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/172152\/","title":{"rendered":"Alexander sets CFL record in Als\u2019 win over Stamps &#8211; Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MONTREAL \u2013 Head coach Jason Maas often insists the Montreal Alouettes can win with anyone in their lineup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298208_703_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But even he admits Davis Alexander gives those odds a serious boost.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander entered the history books Friday with one touchdown and 350 passing yards in a 38-20 victory over the Calgary Stampeders, setting a CFL record with nine straight wins as a starter to begin his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gives us hope. He gives belief. He gives us everything he has,\u201d Maas said of his starting quarterback. \u201cOur whole team feels a bit different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, shoot, he\u2019s won every game he\u2019s started for us \u2013 it\u2019s hard not to believe when he\u2019s out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander completed 26 of 36 pass attempts in his return from missing eight games with a hamstring injury.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Montreal has gone 3-7 without him this season, a record that looked far worse before back-to-back wins against Saskatchewan and Toronto with backup McLeod Bethel-Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>In the previous eight games, the Alouettes totalled 11 offensive touchdowns without their franchise quarterback. On Friday alone, Montreal\u2019s offence punched into the end zone four times.<\/p>\n<p>Short-yardage QB Shea Patterson ran for three touchdowns while Charleston Rambo hauled down a TD catch for Montreal (8-7), which increased its winning streak to three in front of an announced 22,070 at Molson Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe elevates people\u2019s play,\u201d Maas said. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of the fact that the last 10 weeks that he\u2019s worked, he\u2019s worked extremely hard. I am nothing without them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProud of everything we\u2019ve gone through, it\u2019s been a tough year for a lot of us mentally and physically, but we\u2019re battling through and we\u2019re hot right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander said he played cautiously and that his hamstring was \u201cdefinitely sore\u201d after the game, but called the pain manageable and looked forward to Montreal\u2019s upcoming bye week.<\/p>\n<p>His return comes at a great time for the Alouettes, who hope to finish strong in a roller-coaster season that has featured four different starting QBs.<\/p>\n<p>Stampeders receiver Jalen Philpot \u2014 facing off against twin brother Tyson Philpot of the Alouettes \u2014 caught one TD and quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. rushed for another as Calgary (8-6) lost its third straight.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Adams went 19 of 29 passing for 238 yards \u2014 exceeding 3,000 in a season for the third time \u2014 with one touchdown throw and one interception. You got to understand we got to get better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I do think our team will continue to fight, I knew they would, just wasn\u2019t the result we were looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jalen Philpot caught the game\u2019s first touchdown with 1:47 remaining in the first quarter as Calgary took a 7-4 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander, finding a rhythm, put the Alouettes up 11-7 at 12:52 in the second quarter after unleashing a pinpoint 42-yard TD throw to Rambo, electrifying the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI missed a couple throws at the beginning of the game, throws that I don\u2019t usually miss, and boys were getting open,\u201d Alexander said. \u201cI just tell them, and they never doubted, but just keep the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patterson added to the lead with a four-yard rush up the middle, making it 18-7 with 7:25 left in the half.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Adams got one back with 42 seconds left in the half, rushing for a 21-yard TD to complete a seven-play, 86-yard march.<\/p>\n<p>Patterson punched through on a one-yard gain for his second QB sneak touchdown at 8:45 in the third quarter, giving Montreal a 25-14 lead. Earlier in the drive, Alexander fumbled a snap but recovered to find Tyson Philpot on a 28-yard pass.<\/p>\n<p>After Calgary took possession, Montreal linebacker Tyrice Beverette picked off Adams and returned the ball to the Calgary 30.<\/p>\n<p>A Stampeders pass interference penalty then pushed Montreal to the goal line, and Patterson rushed in for another score and a 32-14 Alouettes lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many easy throws,\u201d Dickenson said. \u201cThey were picking on our softness and picking on us. They have a good group, no doubt about it.
