Phoenix forward Alyssa Thomas and Minnesota star Napheesa Collier had collided when Thomas poked the ball loose for a steal. There was no call on the play, and Reeve stormed onto the court to confront the referees, with players and staff attempting to restrain her to no avail. Collier was injured and did not return. Her availability for Game 4 on Sunday is unclear with No. 1 seed Minnesota now trailing in the series 2\u20131.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_bqzoclbyx\">In nearly two minutes of postgame remarks, Reeve blamed the referees for allowing the game to be played too physically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_vhhen2zdt\">\u201cWhen you let the physicality happen, people get hurt, there\u2019s fights, and this is the look that our league wants for some reason\u2026 One of the best players in the league shot zero free throws,\u201d Reeve said, referring to Collier, who did not make a trip to the line but scored 17 points. \u201cShe had five fouls. Shot zero free throws. Got her shoulder pulled out and finished the game with her leg being taken out and probably has a fracture. And so this is what our league wants, O.K. But I want to call for a change of leadership at the league level when it comes to officiating. It\u2019s bad for the game. The officiating crew that we had tonight\u2014for the leadership to deem those three people semifinals playoff worthy is f&#8212;ing malpractice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Minnesota finished Game 3 without Napheesa Collier or Coach Cheryl Reeve.<\/p>\n<p>Coach was assessed a second technical foul and ejected after Collier collided with Alyssa Thomas on this play. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6ZNGuUSXi9\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/6ZNGuUSXi9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 espnW (@espnW) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/espnW\/status\/1971785070881968186?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 27, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_izctrz94m\">The coach went on to say that Minnesota center Maria Kliundikova had gotten \u201cf&#8212;ing cracked\u201d on the glass, \u201cand there\u2019s no call,\u201d and she finished by calling the refereeing \u201cf&#8212;ing awful.\u201d She did not take questions from reporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_o6do3myaq\">The <a class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_aoxits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/wnba\/the-wnba-s-officiating-problem-is-bigger-than-caitlin-clark\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quality of WNBA officiating has been a point of contention<\/a> for years. But it has come under particular fire over the last two seasons, as viewership has grown around the league, putting a brighter spotlight on a longstanding issue. The <a class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_aoxits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/wnba\/lynx-have-valid-complaints-wnba-finals-officiating-game-5-liberty\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024 Finals ended with a controversial foul call<\/a> after a series full of uneven officiating\u2014\u201cThis s&#8212; was stolen from us,\u201d Reeve told reporters after the Lynx fell to the Liberty last October\u2014and the subject has only picked up steam throughout \u201925. Coaches and players across the WNBA have repeatedly complained of inconsistency and of excessive physicality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_kw05rrkn4\">Officiating is overseen by several people in the league office. Sue Blauch is the head of WNBA referee performance and development, and Monty McCutchen is the NBA senior vice president and head of referee development and training, whose role also involves work for the WNBA. League commissioner Cathy Engelbert has additionally mentioned WNBA head of league operations Bethany Donaphin in response to past questions about refereeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_3dl05hyri\">The officials in Phoenix on Friday were Isaac Barnett, Randy Richardson and Jenna Reneau. All have been in the league for multiple years and all refereed in last year\u2019s Finals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_zkhhlywei\">Reeve is the longest tenured coach in the WNBA.
