Ego Nwodim is booked and busy. The actress, who recently announced she\u2019s leaving the cast of Saturday Night Live<\/a> after seven seasons, just wrapped filming an upcoming comedy movie called Little Brother, and she has a new partnership with a cult-favorite fitness brand: Solidcore<\/a>, a low-impact reformer workout class<\/a> that blends elements of strength training<\/a> and Pilates with over 140 national locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am sincerely and authentically obsessed with Solidcore,\u201d Ego, 37, tells Women\u2019s Health. She\u2019s taken nearly 300 classes over the last few years, and calls it a \u201chuge part\u201d of her fitness journey, as well as her life. But it wasn\u2019t always that way\u2014in fact, she used to detest working out. \u201cI had no interest and I didn’t seem to need it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

But after a few years in sedentary confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ego was ready to commit to movement in summer 2022. She tried a lot of workouts, including Pilates and cardio-based fitness classes in Los Angeles, where she was living back then. Ego had heard of Solidcore, and people were calling it the most exciting workout at the time (even though it had launched in 2013<\/a>). The actress decided to try it when she returned to New York later that year. <\/p>\n

Ego fell in love with the workout, and realized just how necessary movement was in her life. \u201cIt’s such a gift that my body can move the way it can, and I’d like to honor that and see how far I can push myself,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

In addition to taking Solidcore classes, Ego has a naturally active lifestyle thanks to living in a walkable city.<\/p>\n

In New York, she\u2019s constantly moving, through running to the train station and walking her dog around her neighborhood. But when it comes to planned exercise, she aims to hit a Solidcore class one to three times a week, although her workouts depend on her fluctuating schedule. (Ego even jokes that she builds her schedule around when she can take Solidcore classes.) <\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s just important to try to make that time for moving,\u201d she says. \u201cIt’s just something that’s a priority to me.\u201d But Ego has also had to make peace with the fact that sometimes her weeks are so busy that she doesn\u2019t get to take class\u2014and that\u2019s okay too. <\/p>\n

One of her favorite parts of Solidcore classes is how challenging they are. \u201cYou get to feel the results of your work the next day,\u201d Ego says. \u201cI love to know that the work I’m doing is impactful and effective, and I think with Solidcore, you absolutely get that.\u201d (The next-day soreness is real!)<\/p>\n

Ego also loves the level of intentionality required in the class. \u201cYou have the option to sort of tap in with yourself, set an intention, and then move really intentionally,\u201d she says. The class is rooted in slow movements, so you can feel your muscles moving and be in tune with your body for 50 minutes. <\/p>\n

She prioritizes rest\u2014which is a lesson she learned from running.<\/p>\n

Ego ran the Brooklyn Half-Marathon<\/a> in 2024, but she\u2019s not running right now. \u201cRunning made me really in tune with my body,\u201d the actress says. \u201cYou’re not supposed to overexert day after day, day in, day out, physically, and rest is just as important as movement and the two go hand-in-hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

With her current workout routine, if Ego is feeling really sore after a class, she\u2019ll take the next day to rest<\/a>, or just stick to walking her dog. \u201cYour recovery is contingent upon rest,\u201d she says, adding that she makes sure to build rest into her schedule.<\/p>\n

Ego is also serious about sleep<\/a>. \u201cIt’s important to get the amount of sleep your body needs so that you can feel refreshed and restored in the morning,\u201d she says. The actress always aims for eight hours, although she’s worked jobs where she hasn\u2019t been able to sleep as much as she\u2019d like to.<\/p>\n

She also meditates, prays, or does breathwork at least once a day. \u201cI find that to be incredibly helpful and effective,\u201d Ego says. \u201cIt’s so crazy how quickly it can sort of calm you, ground you, and center you.\u201d<\/p>\n

While she doesn\u2019t know if it really helps with recovery, Ego takes her heating pad \u201ceverywhere\u201d for comfort. \u201cIt feels like a hug,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you see me, just know the heating pad’s not far behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ego used her TheraGun mostly while she was running and doesn\u2019t have the same need for it now, but found it very useful.<\/p>\n

She also pays close attention to hydration and always has high-protein snacks<\/a> on board. <\/p>\n

\u201cImmediately, instantly, before I’ve done anything else\u2014I’ve barely sat up in the bed\u2014and I’m drinking eight ounces of water,\u201d she says. \u201cIt’s such a game changer, which sounds basic-AF, but I’m like, \u2018Yeah, water’s really that girl.\u2019\u201d Once in a while, Ego will also use a hydration pack, like Liquid I.V.<\/a> or Magna<\/a>, which also has magnesium<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When it comes to her diet, Ego isn\u2019t a big breakfast fan, but sometimes starts her day with Owyn vanilla protein shakes<\/a>. Her other favorite go-to snacks are raw almonds<\/a> and GoMacro bars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her outlook on exercise is to make it a lifelong habit for longevity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t see myself as a fitness girly,\u201d Ego says. \u201cI just am a human who wants to move my body and honor the fact that I can move now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of what inspired her to get moving was that she watched older people in her family and saw \u201cphysically how challenged they could be at times,\u201d Ego says. \u201cMy hope is to learn from the ways they’ve lived their lives and say, \u2018How can I do things a little differently? Or how can I prepare myself for what life looks like at their age?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ego wondered if she could get herself to a place where movement was part of her life, and that way, she\u2019d stick with it later on in life, too. Otherwise, incorporating it later on would be more challenging, she says. So, the actress turned fitness from something she hated, to something she craved, by finding classes she really enjoyed. \u201cMy body won’t always be able to move like this, but while it can, I’d like to offer it that\u2014and so that’s been exciting,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

As for her career post-SNL, Ego is excited for people to see Little Brother and says \u201cthere\u2019s way more in store.\u201d When asked if she\u2019s hoping to continue acting, or also get into writing and directing, she said: \u201cI want to do it all. Let’s put it that way.\u201d <\/p>\n
