Luke Donald’s Team Europe are cruising towards a successful defence of the Ryder Cup<\/a> at Bethpage Black in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donald’s defending champions well and truly turned the screw on Saturday to take a giant seven-point lead (11.5-4.5) into the 12 Sunday singles matches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Europe won both the foursomes and fourballs on day two by a 3-1 scoreline to take complete control of the biennial contest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Their seven-point lead marks the largest entering the singles in Ryder Cup history since 1979.<\/p>\n

Should Europe go on to win the 2025 Ryder Cup, which is now expected given the strength of their lead, they will become the first away team to be victorious since Medinah in 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donald is also looking to become the first captain to win consecutive Ryder Cups since his compatriot Tony Jacklin in 1989.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not only will Europe be looking to wrap things up quickly in the final day singles, but the visitors might just also have one eye on setting a new record in the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The record winning margin in Ryder Cup history is 10 points (19-9) – something USA achieved fairly recently at Whistling Straits in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For some players on the European team this week, that week in Wisconsin marked one of their most painful memories as a professional.<\/p>\n

It was a defeat that even reduced Rory McIlroy to tears, a player who once again received shocking abuse and insults<\/a> from a minority of American fans on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McIlroy has notched an impressive 3.5 points from four sessions at Bethpage, and he now has the chance to pull level with late great Seve Ballesteros on the all-time European list with 22.5 total points.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Seven points clear heading into Sunday, Europe will now have a golden chance to set the record straight after their 19-9 trouncing at the hands of Steve Stricker’s USA in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the first job for the Europeans will be to get the job done and win the 2025 Ryder Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n
