Matthew McConaughey<\/a> is looking back at a time that he had to keep his mom Kay<\/a> at arm\u2019s length.<\/p>\n

In a new interview, the 55-year-old Oscar-winning actor revealed that he took a nearly decade-long \u201chiatus\u201d from his 93-year-old mom because she kept leaking stories about him to the press.<\/p>\n

Keep reading to find out more\u2026\u201cWe had about an eight-year period where I had to have short conversations with her on our Sunday phone calls because she was sharing a lot of that information,\u201d Matthew told People<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I\u2019d read about it in the news or see it in the local paper,\u201d he continued. \u201cShe couldn\u2019t help herself.\u201d <\/p>\n

Kay confirmed that they \u201cwere on a hiatus\u201d because of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout eight years after that, I got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, \u2018You know what? My mom can say whatever the hell she wants,\u2019\u201d Matthew added. \u201cIt\u2019s much more fun now\u2026 I\u2019d say we\u2019re closer now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew and Kay are so close now that they will be sharing the screen in the new movie The Lost Bus, which hits Apple TV+ on October 3. The survival thriller will also mark the acting debut of Matthew\u2018s 17-year-old son Levi<\/a>! <\/p>\n
