{"id":176156,"date":"2025-09-28T21:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T21:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/176156\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T21:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T21:00:13","slug":"managers-optimistic-on-emerging-market-utilities-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/176156\/","title":{"rendered":"Managers Optimistic On Emerging Market Utilities, Infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"inset-img\" alt=\"Managers Optimistic On Emerging Market Utilities, Infrastructure\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Asiacityscape.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"standfirst\">Managers of the Utilico Emerging Markets Trust, a UK-listed investment trust, marked its 20th anniversary on the London Stock Exchange this month, and outlined investment opportunities in emerging markets.\t  \t  \t  \t  \t  \t  <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Optimistic sentiment about emerging markets \u2013\u00a0and&#13;<br \/>\n  infrastructure in particular \u2013 is gaining momentum, portfolio&#13;<br \/>\n  managers say.\u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Charles Jillings and Jacqueline Broers, co-portfolio managers of&#13;<br \/>\n  the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthbriefing.com\/html\/section.php?keywords=Utilico%20Emerging%20Markets%20Trust\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Utilico&#13;<br \/>\n  Emerging Markets Trust<\/a>, highlighted\u00a0at a media event&#13;<br \/>\n  that emerging markets have been outperforming developed markets,&#13;<br \/>\n  and long-term prospects look favourable.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Their portfolio is\u00a0focused on defensive sectors such as&#13;<br \/>\n  utilities and infrastructure, positioning it to weather near-term&#13;<br \/>\n  volatility more effectively than the broader market.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Jillings drew attention to the strong GDP growth in emerging&#13;<br \/>\n  markets, with India still being one of the fastest growing&#13;<br \/>\n  economies, even though it has been hit by\u00a050 per cent US&#13;<br \/>\n  tariffs.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthbriefing.com\/html\/section.php?keywords=M&amp;G\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">M&amp;G<\/a> also recently&#13;<br \/>\n  highlighted that\u00a0the economic impact of tariffs in India and&#13;<br \/>\n  Brazil is less than the political noise\u00a0suggests. \u201cThe&#13;<br \/>\n  impact of 50 per cent tariffs on India is limited as domestic&#13;<br \/>\n  consumption is the main driver of growth not exports. The&#13;<br \/>\n  economic impact on Brazil is also limited,\u201d Charles de Quinsonas,&#13;<br \/>\n  head of emerging market debt at M&amp;G, said.<\/p>\n<p>Wealth managers are reconsidering global asset allocation&#13;<br \/>\n  by\u00a0shifting some money out of the US and into Europe, Asia&#13;<br \/>\n  and emerging markets.\u00a0A number of firms, such as&#13;<br \/>\n  London-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthbriefing.com\/html\/section.php?keywords=GIB%20Asset%20Management\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GIB Asset&#13;<br \/>\n  Management<\/a> and California-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthbriefing.com\/html\/section.php?keywords=Franklin%20Templeton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Franklin&#13;<br \/>\n  Templeton<\/a>,\u00a0are also positive about emerging markets.&#13;<br \/>\n  Even as global uncertainty rises, Franklin Templeton believes the&#13;<br \/>\n  market to be underestimated and under-owned. Rapid digital adoption is also accelerating&#13;<br \/>\n  demand for digital infrastructure, she added. Emerging markets&#13;<br \/>\n  have an increasing importance in the share of world trade, she&#13;<br \/>\n  said. \u00a0&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Despite macro volatility and geopolitical uncertainty, Jillings&#13;<br \/>\n  and Broers believe that investment in infrastructure will&#13;<br \/>\n  continue.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Utilico\u00a0Emerging Markets Trust (UEM)<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n  Jillings and Broers co-manage the Utilico\u00a0Emerging Markets&#13;<br \/>\n  Trust (UEM), which specialises in assets benefiting from&#13;<br \/>\n  long-term infrastructure megatrends providing potential for&#13;<br \/>\n  sustainable growth, such as social and digital infrastructure,&#13;<br \/>\n  energy growth and\u00a0transition, and global trade.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  UEM has a big interest in Latin America, where companies can&#13;<br \/>\n  exhibit monopolistic characteristics.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  Despite the 50 per cent US tariffs on Brazil, Jillings and&#13;<br \/>\n  Broers\u00a0remain invested in Brazil. This includes an&#13;<br \/>\n  investment in\u00a0Brazilian\u00a0waste\u00a0management&#13;<br \/>\n  company,\u00a0Orizon, which\u00a0operates 17 sanitary landfill&#13;<br \/>\n  sites.These sites collect and use biogas\u00a0\u2013 an operation&#13;<br \/>\n  which generates carbon credits.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  The managers are also invested in the growth-oriented market of&#13;<br \/>\n  India. In particular, they invest in IndiGrid, an infrastructure&#13;<br \/>\n  investment trust, which\u00a0develops\u00a0and&#13;<br \/>\n  operates\u00a0transmission lines, solar generation and battery&#13;<br \/>\n  energy storage in India. They believe it is well positioned to&#13;<br \/>\n  benefit from India\u2019s rising power demand and green transition.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n  The country is also favoured by other wealth managers such&#13;<br \/>\n  as\u00a0French asset manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthbriefing.com\/html\/section.php?keywords=Amundi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amundi<\/a>\u00a0due to its strong&#13;<br \/>\n  GDP growth and lower\u00a0exposure to US trade. It operates 33 terminals in 20 countries.
