Jenna Bush Hager is opening up about a major cause of tension with her dad, former president George W. Bush, during her younger years. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a period of time when I made bad grades,\u201d the TV host divulged during Friday\u2019s episode<\/a> of \u201cToday With Jenna & Friends.\u201d When guest co-host Sheinelle Jones appeared skeptical, Hager doubled down, saying they were \u201cbad.\u201d<\/p>\n Jones then asked the mother of three how her parents, George and Laura Bush, would \u201chandle it.\u201d <\/p>\n Jenna Bush Hager recalled a cause of tension with her father, former president George W. YouTube\/@jennaandfriends<\/p>\n \u201cMy dad would sit with me at that kitchen table and try to teach me math, and we\u2019d get in big fights and I\u2019d cry myself to sleep,\u201d Hager, now 43, laughed. <\/p>\n Jones called the confession \u201crelatable,\u201d adding that she thinks it\u2019s typical of \u201ckitchen tables all over this country at night.\u201d<\/p>\n Hager did not elaborate on exactly when the kitchen table meltdowns occurred \u2014 but she and fraternal twin sister Barbara were 19 when their father\u2019s first term as president began in 2001. <\/p>\n Jones asked Hager how her parents, George and Laura Bush, would \u201chandle it.\u201d Corbis via Getty Images<\/p>\n Hager said she\u2019d \u201cget in big fights\u201d with her father as he attempted to teach her math at the kitchen table. In September 2024, she admitted that she called the former president in tears<\/a> over news that her former co-host Hoda Kotb would be leaving the show after 26 years with NBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know if you\u2019re embarrassed to say this or not, but I think that we should [talk about how] you called your dad. And I remember when you first started working together with me, you were afraid, so she called her dad,\u201d Kotb recalled at the time, referencing Hager nabbing the co-hosting job back in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Hager and her father, seen here at her 2008 wedding to Hengry Hager, remain close. NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images<\/p>\n Hager jumped in, recalling that George was \u201chappy\u201d for her, but jokingly reminded her that NBC veteran Kotb was \u201cthe star.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cThen I called him last night,\u201d Hager divulged. \u201cAt first, he thought something really awful [happened], like I lost a loved one, because of how emotional I was.\u201d <\/p>\n Hager continued, recalling how her father comforted and encouraged her. \u201cAnd then, he said, \u2018Oh, she\u2019s leaving, because it\u2019s time, and you\u2019re going to be fine. It\u2019s your turn.
