(Photo by IRENE STACHON\/Lehtikuva\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Lehtikuva\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2025\/06\/24\/northern-lights-tonight-10-states-may-see-aurora-on-tuesday-during-geomagnetic-storm\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2025\/06\/24\/northern-lights-tonight-10-states-may-see-aurora-on-tuesday-during-geomagnetic-storm\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Northern Lights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Northern Lights<\/a> may be visible in northern U.S. state and central Canada on Tuesday night, according to a forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/communities\/aurora-dashboard-experimental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/communities\/aurora-dashboard-experimental\" aria-label=\"Space Weather Prediction Center\">Space Weather Prediction Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sky-watchers in 14 U.S. states may have a chance to see the aurora borealis on the northern horizon as soon as it gets dark, though astronomical twilight often persists much of the night above about 50 degrees north latitude in July.<\/p>\n<p>Latest Northern Lights Forecast<\/p>\n<p>The agency\u2019s <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/3-day-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/3-day-forecast\" aria-label=\"three-day forecast\">three-day forecast<\/a> indicates a minor geomagnetic storm, measured at a value of G1 on a scale of G1 to G5. According to NOAA\u2019s forecast, the Kp index \u2014 which provides a rough guide to the intensity of auroral displays \u2014 may reach 5.<\/p>\n<p>In a discussion <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/forecast-discussion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/forecast-discussion\" aria-label=\"post\">post<\/a>, NOAA officials stated that a G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm is most likely on July 23 UTC, which translates to late on July 22 for North America. The \u201cunsettled to active\u201d geomagnetic conditions \u2014 minor disturbances in Earth\u2019s magnetic field \u2014 could continue through Thursday, according to NOAA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\" role=\"button\">NOAA&#8217;s aurora viewline for July 22, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>NOAA<\/p>\n<p>Where The Northern Lights May Be Visible<\/p>\n<p>NOAA\u2019s latest <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental\" aria-label=\"aurora viewlines\">aurora viewlines<\/a> indicate that aurora displays are a possibility in northern U.S. states and Canada, with 14 U.S. states having a chance after dark on Tuesday, July 22.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. states that may see aurora include (northerly parts of) Washington, northern Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Areas far from light pollution are likely to offer the best views.<\/p>\n<p>However, high-latitude locations \u2014 such as Alaska, northern Canada Scandinavia and Iceland \u2014 will have a better chance.<\/p>\n<p>Check <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-30-minute-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-30-minute-forecast\" aria-label=\"NOAA&#039;s 30-minute forecast\">NOAA&#8217;s 30-minute forecast<\/a> or use the <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/aurora-alerts.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/aurora-alerts.uk\/\" aria-label=\"Glendale App\">Glendale App<\/a> for the latest forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>Why The Northern Lights Are Being Seen In The U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The imminent potential display of aurora is due to a high-speed stream of solar wind coming from a coronal hole \u2014 a gap in the sun\u2019s outer atmosphere, its corona, where solar wind escapes more freely into space. It\u2019s also of \u201cnegative polarity,\u201d which means its magnetic field is orientated in such a way that interactions with Earth\u2019s magnetic field are enhanced, if aligned just right.<\/p>\n<p>More generally, the possibility of displays of the aurora borealis at more southerly latitudes than is typically down to an increase in solar activity, which is currently <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/08\/03\/northern-lights-alert-solar-activity-at-23-year-high-scientists-say\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/08\/03\/northern-lights-alert-solar-activity-at-23-year-high-scientists-say\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"at a 23-year high\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">at a 23-year high<\/a> due to the ongoing <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/15\/the-sun-is-at-solar-maximum-and-aurora-will-now-spike-nasa-says\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/15\/the-sun-is-at-solar-maximum-and-aurora-will-now-spike-nasa-says\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"solar maximum period\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">solar maximum period<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sun is now thought to be on the wane, having peaked in late 2024, but solar maximum periods often have double peaks. Besides, the best aurora displays often occur in the few years after solar maximum. If the current solar cycle does have a long tail, good aurora sightings in the U.S. could result for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>What Causes The Northern Lights<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Lights are caused by the solar wind, a stream of charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth\u2019s magnetic field.
