{"id":179666,"date":"2025-09-30T08:29:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T08:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/179666\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T08:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T08:29:11","slug":"no-danger-after-starlink-space-debris-lights-up-saskatchewan-skies-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/179666\/","title":{"rendered":"No danger after Starlink space debris lights up Saskatchewan skies: expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than a year after <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/space-debris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">space debris<\/a> likely linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/spacex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SpaceX<\/a> spacecraft landed in Saskatchewan, remnants of a Starlink satellite re-entering Earth\u2019s atmosphere was spotted last week over the skies of the province.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298208_703_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Samantha Lawler, an associate professor of astronomy at the University of Regina, told Global News about the Starlink satellite re-entry and said she\u2019s urging farmers east of Saskatoon to keep an eye out for space debris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s getting to be more common,\u201d Lawler told Global News of space debris re-entering the atmosphere. \u201cHere on the southern Prairies, we\u2019re under the densest band of them just because of the orbits that have been chosen. So right here is the most likely to see the re-entries happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would love for people to get out and look and see if any pieces made it to the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Space Agency told Global News in an email it was \u201caware of the event\u201d in Saskatchewan and continues to monitor developments related to space debris in collaboration with domestic and international partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough no debris has been confirmed to have reached the ground in this case, the CSA remains attentive to public safety and acknowledges the concerns associated with the re-entry of space objects,\u201d a spokesperson for the agency wrote.<\/p>\n<p>A Starlink satellite re-entering Earth is not unusual, with SpaceX noting the technology operates in a low orbit below 600 km.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAtmospheric drag at these altitudes will deorbit a satellite naturally in five years or less, depending on the altitude and satellite design, should one fail on orbit,\u201d according to a SpaceX report on space sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>According to astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who tracks Starlink satellites, there are currently about 8,543 in orbit with 8,527 that are working.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298209_554_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time SpaceX technology is believed to have been found on Canadian soil or for space debris to have landed here.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Space junk retrieved from Saskatchewan farm'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/WEB_VERSION_SPACE_JUNK_PICKUP.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:47<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSpace junk retrieved from Saskatchewan farm\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Last May, the Canadian Space Agency said it was looking into space debris that had been found on a farm northwest of Regina.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Experts, including Lawler, told Global News at the time that the debris was likely linked to a SpaceX spacecraft that returned to Earth in February and was later collected by the company, as required by international law.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to last May, another object crashed through the roof of a Florida home in March 2024, while a chunk of debris was found on Australia farmland in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>But objects have also fallen to Earth this year as well, with a large piece found in a village in Kenya\u2019s south in January, measuring about 2.5 metres in diameter and weighing about 500 kg. It was believed to be a fragment from a rocket.<\/p>\n<p>When the space debris fell last year in Saskatchewan, the Canadian Space Agency told Global News that there have been about 36,000 space objects flying in low Earth orbit since Dec. 20, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of space debris hitting someone on the ground is relatively low. The odds are so low for any individual, but every time we have a re-entry, it\u2019s like you\u2019re rolling the dice again and eventually, someone\u2019s going to get hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the Outer Space Treaty, which provides the basic framework on international space law, rules dictate who is responsible should such a case arise.<\/p>\n<p>The treaty says that states, or countries, will be responsible for national space activities whether carried out by governmental or non-governmental entities and will be held liable for any damage caused by their space objects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the likelihood of debris causing harm remains very low, the CSA supports ongoing efforts to improve tracking, prediction, and mitigation strategies.
